SCATTERING – GATHERING

Friday 8th Febuary – Wednesday March 27th 2013 – Garter Lane Waterford

Scattering-Gathering, an exhibition by 20ten art group, looks at aspects of emigration and immigration relating to Ireland. Almost every family in Ireland has been directly touched by voluntary or forced emigration at some time. Indeed older people are now in the middle of the third major period of emigration in their lifetime, including the 1950’s and 1980’s. Conversely, in recent decades Ireland has also been seen as an attractive destination for people in other countries seeking a better future.

The works in the exhibition draw on the artists’ personal experiences. The absent loved one, sorrowful partings, joyous re-unions and long distance communication are deeply rooted in Irish culture. A wide diversity of expression on the basic theme is showcased in the exhibition. Media utilised include Abstract Painting, Video, Photography, Sculpture, Drawing and Figurative Painting. The artists aim to encourage new perspectives and fresh thinking on these sometimes difficult issues.20ten is a Waterford based collective of artists: Pat Carri, Kevin Connolly, Róisín Kinsella, Darragh Lyons, Pat McArdle, Christine O’Brien Shanahan, Conor Rush, and Milia Tsaoussis-Maddock.

To further represent diverging experiences of emigration and immigration the group has invited two non-national artists now living in Waterford, Magdalena Karol, Poland, and Willemein Koelink, Holland, to participate.Waterford artists Kate-Bowe O’Brien and Andrea Caulfield who now live and work abroad will also contribute, see www.20tenartgroup.com for more info.
