WATERFORD YOUTH ARTS ‘CRUCIBLE’ IN GARTER LANE

Waterford Youth Arts in association with Garter Lane Arts Centre presents The Crucible by Arthur Miller – August 23rd to 30th – 7.30pm

The Crucible is set in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, telling the story of the Salem Witch Trials, a time when paranoia, hysteria, and deceit gripped the Puritan towns of New England. Miller was liberal in his fictionalisation of those events, saying “what I was doing was writing a fictional story about an important theme.” The “important theme” was clear to many observers in 1953 at the play’s opening as it was written in response to Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House Committee on Un-American Activities’ crusade against supposed communist sympathizers. With intolerance, the intrusion of state-led morals into the private lives of citizens, mass hysteria and paranoia at the heart of this play, The Crucible continues to show how often history repeats itself.

Crucible Poster‘You must understand, sir, that a person is either with this court or he must be counted against it, there be no road between. This is a sharp time, now, a precise time – we live no longer in the dusky afternoon when evil mixed itself with good and befuddled the world. Now, by God’s grace, the shining sun is up, and them that fear not light will surely praise it.’

Directed by Jim Nolan, set designed by Dermot Quinn.
