Waterford City & County Council's Arts resource site
Friday 13th to Sunday 22nd August 2021
This year Waterford Walls welcomes 20 street artists, both Irish and International, to Waterford City and County. These artists will be painting 24 walls altogether across not only the city, but also further afield as the 2021 festival expands out into the county of Waterford, bringing its incredible mural artwork to Tramore, An Rinn, Ballyduff Upper and Tallow.
New to the 2021 festival programme is the Mentorship and Training Programme. Waterford Walls have paired experienced mural artists to work with and guide emerging local artists on all of the stages involved in the creation of their own piece of mural artwork for Waterford Walls. The mentored artists will be creating their murals along Stephens Street, and the Artists participating in this programme are:
MADC with Lucas Dwan
ZABOU with Juliette Viode
MAGDALENA KAROL with Karol
RUSS with Claudia Jacques
DEIRDRE BREEN with Anna Love
This year marks a huge step forward for The Walls Project – after 7 years running the Waterford Walls festival and transforming the city with incredible mural artwork, this year, as part of the Brightening Air | Coiscéim Coiligh Festival, Waterford Walls has gone virtual.
Multiple communities, young people and artists, both nationally and internationally, have worked together to create #MovingMurals – An augmented reality hidden in plain sight, and accessible through a free-to-download app.
People all over the world can now download the Bepart app for free, and see a selection of murals in the city move before their very eyes.
This app invites you to experience moving mural artwork that has been animated by school (St Pauls Community College Waterford) and university students (Limerick School of Art and Design) across Ireland, working alongside artists, The Walls Project and Italian non-profit BEPART to transform public street art works into augmented realities.
As part of the festival The Walls Project, Waterford Walls International Street Art Festival and Goma will be presenting a panel talk entitled An Evening of Moving Murals discussing the journey of the #MovingMurals project and the new skills learnt along the way.
