As part of Waterford City’s programme for Culture Night 2013, Donal Moore, Waterford City Archivist, will give guided tours of the current Annie Brophy exhibition “Welcome to the 60s” along with a short illustrated talk on Annie Brophy’s work.
Over 90 years ago a young Waterford woman, Annie Brophy, took the courageous and, for the time, highly unusual step of setting up her own business. Not only that, but she chose a profession which would have been far outside the normal, narrow career choices available to women in early 20th century Ireland. In so doing, she became probably the first female professional photographer in Ireland.
Little could Miss Brophy have known that her career as a photographer would extend over 55 years! Nor could she have had any idea that her life’s work would become such an integral and cherished part of the cultural and historical scene of the city in which she was born and lived her entire life.
This exhibition, the twelfth curated from the Collection by Waterford City Archives, features a new selection of images from the 1960s – probably the decade which saw most change in Ireland in the last century. The exhibition includes subjects from Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Carlow and further afield. The content varies from the playfulness, innocence and wonder of youth to the pride, protection and experience of age. The change in style and presentation across the decade is also evident from the photographs, but in all cases Annie Brophy’s professionalism, eye for detail and respect for the subjects shines through. Where possible, the people in the photographs have been identified.
In addition, Donal will give a running illustrated talk on Annie Brophy, her career and her photographs. If anyone would like to bring along their own Annie Brophy portraits, Donal will be more than glad to give advice on preservation of these priceless family heirlooms.
