WATERFORD ARTS GRANTS AWARDED!

The Waterford City & County Arts Practice Grants were passed at the March Plenary meeting of the Council on Thursday 9th. In all €83,500 was awarded with another €6,300 to be spent on specific Arts Bursaries in the coming months.

2017 saw the largest ever number of applications for the Arts Practice Grants with 74 proposals forwarded for consideration and a record 38 projects and programmes awarded. This is the first time that grants have been passed under the new Waterford City and County Arts Strategy 2016-2021 – “A Shared Vision for Waterford”.

A Council spokesperson said they weren’t surprised at the level of interest considering the current amount of creative arts activity throughout the City and County.

“A gauge for creative activity is the amount of new works produced aligned with interest in existing works and opportunities to access them.” Arts Officer Conor Nolan pointed to two major amateur Drama groups (Brideview & Curtain Call) currently crisscrossing across the Country, Art exhibitions by Ben Hennessey, Anthony Mackie, Janie Kavanagh and Sandra Kelly, Aerial dance in the City, Vivaldi in Lismore, contributions to Maggie’s Moustache, Jerry Fish and Petticoat Loose. He added “There’s a new theatre company, an increase in funding for Marching Bands, and, with the Arts Council, a Garter Lane national tour for “Johnny I Hardly Knew ya”.

The grants were judged in the light of the central three themes in the new arts plan namely

  • Participation & Access
  • Support for Artists
  • Identity and Place

Proposals were invited under the headings of:

  1. Amateur/Voluntary Arts grants
  2. Professional Project grants
  3. Rural Arts Networking grants
  4. Playwright & Producer team grant

As there were no applications for the Rural Arts Networking Grant the allocation went back into the Professional Project Grants. Bursaries amounting to €6,500 will be advertised over the next couple of months which will bring the Arts Grants figure up to €90,000.

Confirmation letters with Terms and Conditions will go out in the post over the next fortnight.
