‘The Happy Medium’ by Darragh Lyons

Darragh Lyons is a visual artist living and working in Waterford City.

Lyons’s paintings can be seen as a distillation of various viewpoints of ‘Being in the World’, and can be read as diagrams of aspects of the Human Condition. The work deals with notions of emotion, memory, place, society, family, and solitude, as well as the mechanics of thought and reason.

Lyons attended Newtown School Waterford and the School of Architecture at UCD, where he gained a BScArch degree.

Lyons is a passionate advocate for the value of painting and drawing, having benefited himself from making work while an inpatient at the Department of Psychiatry at UHW. Darragh has a mental health condition called Schizoaffective Disorder, while this can be challenging it also informs his voice and viewpoint.

He finds a thrill in the creative act, as a state of flow and focus is achieved through the process of painting, enjoying the familiarity of a methodical routine. The outcome is a sense of meditative mindfulness.

Lyons work has featured in many group exhibitions, solo shows, featured in the RHA annual exhibition on numerous occasions, and can be found in public and private collections.
