An Evening Of Live Experimental Music by internationally acclaimed Australian composer Robert Curgenven
Sonic Arts Waterford (SAW) presents its second promo event of the year leading up to the annual Sonic Dreams international festival of experimental electronic music and arts in September. As part of ongoing community initiatives, Sonic Arts Waterford are forging links with Waterford Access Music.
Robert Curgenven is an Ireland-based Australian composer employing sound as a physical field of perception. His work encourages us to consider our physical experience of sound: how it shapes our understanding of our embodiment; what it tells us about this embodiment and of how we inhabit space, both individually and collectively as an audience; and how the auditory shapes our perception of time and duration. For him sound is weather and his work entreats us to feel and hear air. His live performances, installations and album releases span pipe organ through to feedback, immersive resonances via turntables and custom-made vinyl, as well as carefully detailed field recordings from remote areas in Australia where he lived for many years. The Wire surmises that “behind the music—to these ears at any rate—lurk such [disparate] presences as Alvin Lucier, King Tubby, Murray Schafer and Eliane Radigue.”
Robert will perform his critically acclaimed work Climata that Bernard Clarke, RTE described as “an extraordinary piece… artfully weaves the elements into a multipart composition… [that] explores the role of sound art as a psychological reflection and also as a social commentary” .
Performing also on the night are emerging Waterford artists Michael O’Brien and Cian Hackett.
Sonic Arts Waterford (SAW) is a community based voluntary organisation set up to promote live experimental electronic music and arts in Waterford. Founded in 2013 it has a mission to bring world class artists to Waterford to work alongside local emerging composers and musicians. Our cultural exchanges have allowed local artists to gain international exposure as well as bring internationally acclaimed artists to Waterford so as to enjoy community, friendship and music in a voluntary environment of harmony.
