Waterford City Council’s Primary Schools Programme covers Performance and Visual Art.
Performance
For 2018 we are again partnering Little Red Kettle for a 50 minute theatre performance aimed at 6th classes. It is conceived and directed by Liam Meagher and involves children being brought onstage to act out up to 26 characters! It is performed/facilitated by four Waterford professional actors.
The idea of the programme is to increase accessibility to the arts in marginalised communities by removing physical and financial barriers to participation. It brings stimulating, entertaining theatre to sixty nine primary schools and centres in Waterford City and County locations over eleven weeks between November –and February and includes over 130 performances.
It is developed within the context of the drama curriculum and addresses themes and issues relevant to young people. As to many this is their first opportunity to fully engage with the arts, a module of the performance is to explain how it fits into the overall context of the Arts and how the Arts in turn fits into everyday life.

Visual Art
Greyfriars’ Municipal Gallery has an active all year around outreach Art programme that has a particular leaning towards 5th and 6th year primary schools.
The Spring programme is based on Portraits from the Municipal Collection. Students are brought through the processes of the various mediums and are then tasked to draw a portrait of a classmate considering proportion shape and tone. They will also be introduced to the concept of exhibition spaces and galleries in particular.
The programme is carried out in Greyfriars’ Gallery on Greyfriars’ Street, Waterford and may, if the opportunity arises, include other galleries in the area.
As to many this is their first opportunity to fully engage with the arts, a module of the programme is to explain how it fits into the overall context of the Arts and how the Arts in turn fits into everyday life.
