Central Library Waterford, 11th & 18th November 2022 11am – 1pm
Two free workshops will take place in Central Library, in association with Waterford City & County Archivist, Joanne Rothwell, and Poetry Ireland facilitator David McLoghlin,.on the 11th & 18th of November from 11am – 1pm.
Poetry as Commemoration is a project that engages poetry as a means to deepen our collective understanding of Ireland’s past and to explore a challenging period of history relating to the War of Independence and Civil War. It is an initiative of the Irish Poetry Reading Archive at UCD
Library and supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport & Media under the Decade of Centenaries programme 2012-2023.
In partnership with Poetry Ireland, Poetry as Commemoration is hosting a series of creative writing workshops across Ireland. Creative writing and other forms of creative expression will be collected and archived in UCD Special Collections to provide future generations with a snapshot of how the centenary of these wars was marked in 2022-2023.
Join archivist Joanne Rothwell and poet David McLoghlin for two free workshops exploring Waterford City and County collections relating to the War of Independence and Civil War and engaging with the items as creative prompts. Participants will compose their own response to the materials under the guidance of an experienced writer. Participants are welcome to bring stories or documents relating to their family history but this is not required. No prior knowledge or experience necessary.
