Piano Day 2018 – 88 Keys for Two Days

Waterford joins worldwide Piano Day celebrations held on the 88th day of the year with outdoor and indoor events again this year.

We tweaked it a little bit to fully enjoy 88 keys: we added one more day to our festivities so the dates you want to mark in your calendars are 29th and 30th March.

Piano Day 2018 posterFollowing last year’s success, a community piano donated by Comeragh Pianos will stand outdoors for all to play. This year we’ll see it in two locations: John Roberts Square and The Apple Market. It’s safe to bet there’ll be astounding performances heard, both from amateurs and professionals. Killian Browne from a local funk band Backroad Smokers Club will play some tunes from classic to jazz and anything in between if we happen to have any downtime!

Tim Jackson from Comeragh Pianos will give us a very informative talk on history of pianos, so make sure you stay tuned.

The evening concerts will start with ‘Emergence’ piano album launch by an award winning Elaine Nolan. Elaine will take us on a journey reaching for a dream and letting it take flight woven with both delicate and boisterous compositions. This concert is in conjunction with Shine Discovery – a community mental health support.

Piano Day’s grand finale will be on Good Friday – but we call it Good Piano Friday. And for a good reason: we’ll hear a concert given on a Steinway grand piano by a Berlin based composer Anthony Daniel. Anthony has already played in venues like Funkhaus Studio 1 along side composers like Nils Frahm – founder of Piano Day. Anthony’s original compositions will be heard in collaboration with Pablo Iglesias/Geso, known for his synesthetic live visuals at festivals such as File Hipersonica in São Paulo and Applied Sound Arts in Leipzig. Elaine Nolan will play the cello to accompany some compositions.

Piano Day 2018 in Waterford is funded by Waterford City and County Council and is supported by Waterford Music, Comeragh Pianos and The Apple Market.
