Events in The Theatre Royal in October

“One day the priest from the school of pigs came to see me but he had a wasp’s head”
From one of Ireland’s most daringly original writers, Frank Pig Says Hello, Patrick McCabe’s stage version of his acclaimed novel The Butcher Boy, first appeared as part of the 1992 Dublin Theatre Festival. The story focuses on the character of Francie Brady, a troubled boy struggling to come to terms with himself, his family and ultimately, his entire surroundings. It is a searing and provocative investigation of violence that charts the disintegration of this young man. Difficult but rewarding, humorous yet harrowing, Frank Pig Says Hello is at times breathtaking, often haunting and always hugely engrossing.
A black comedy, a grotesque fusion of story telling and role-play where over 30 characters are played by two versatile actors, the production offers a highly theatrical, visually inventive experience. Frank Pig Says Hello touches the soul.
With Patrick O’ Donnell and Gerard Adlum. Directed by Geoff O’ Keeffe, Designed by Gerard Bourke

A dangerous tale of ambition, jealousy and love will unfurl as Shakespeare’s classic tale of deception hurtles to its dramatic and poignant conclusion.

Saturday 19 October – 8pm
Amazing Grace is a catch phrase often applied to Brendan Grace and indeed very true in many respects. The genial and much loved Family Comedian is celebrating 42 Years in the Comedy Business and is now more popular than at any time in his career to date and what an illustrious career that has been. Brendan’s latest show features some brand new material and some ‘Old Favourites’ from his vast repertoire over the last 40 years. His sense of timing and ability to read an audience is without equal.vA brilliant character actor, his ‘Bottler’ character is legendary and is now featured at every performance. Apart from his obvious ‘star quality’ in all aspects of his performance Brendan’s drawing power is enormous and the ‘House Full’ sign is the norm rather than the exception at his concerts.

Equinox
Wednesday October 23 – 8pm
The band Equinox is a collective of five like minded musicians who share the desire to celebrate a common sense of balance; that between tension and resolution, between dissonance and consonance, between the present and the past.
Based in the Netherlands, Equinox is co-lead by Guitarist Dan Nicholas and bassist Johnny Daly. Nicholas comes from New York City and Daly is a native of Dublin, Ireland. Both musicians have made the Netherlands their home, inspired by the rich jazz climate they found there.
Joining Nicholas and Daly in Equinox are three of the country’s top jazz musicians; the soulful and powerful tenor saxophonist Sjoerd Dijkhuizen, the elegant and adventurous pianist Bob Wijnen and master drummer Marcel Serierse.
The band plays a mix of vivid original pieces, personal arrangements of standards and classic jazz repertoire by the likes of Thelonious Monk, Billy Strayhorn, Charles Mingus and Horace Silver.
Equinox is deeply rooted in a wide spectrum of jazz tradition, which constantly informs the band’s musical explorations. The individual members of the band all draw inspiration from this tradition in the development of their own personal avenues of musical expression. http://www.equinoxjazzquintet.com
