NEWFOUNDLAND MUSIC

Coastguard Cultural Centre, Friday September 16th at 7pm

To mark Culture Night 2016 we celebrate the musical culture of Newfoundland. As you may know, many emigrants from the south-east of Ireland settled in Newfoundland. In fact it is said that the locals still speak with a slight Waterford accent. Hence it will be interesting to hear about our distant relatives.

An Illustrated talk by Bridget O’Connell.

Local musician and lecturer Bridget O’Connell specialises in fiddle playing and has taught the fiddle in the south-eastern Munster region for the past fourteen years. She has recently completed a PhD thesis regarding Newfoundland fiddle styles and has spent many months carrying out both intensive fieldwork and archival research in Newfoundland. Her presentation will provide a descriptive account of music making in rural Newfoundland with a particular focus on fiddle playing. Bridget has also completed a master’s degree majoring in fiddle performance at the University of Limerick and will perform some of the tunes that she collected whilst on her travels.
