Nelius Flynn Bio

Nelius Flynn was born and raised in the picturesque town of Sligo during the transformative 1960s and 70s. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Garavogue River and the shores of Lough Gill, Nelius developed an early connection to the landscape, which would inspire his art for years to come. His summers spent in Co. Kerry, where his parents were from, added further depth to his creative imagination, offering him new perspectives and experiences.

A student of Summerhill College, Sligo, Nelius pursued his artistic journey at what was then Sligo Regional College before continuing his teacher training at the National College of Art & Design in Dublin. His career as an educator spanned 33 years as the sole Art Teacher at St Macartan’s College, Monaghan, where he was able to nurture and inspire countless young artists.

Upon his retirement, Nelius turned his full attention to his own art. Working primarily with fine liner pen and watercolour pencil, his skilful, meticulous drawings bring to life a wide range of subjects, from landscapes and architecture to vintage objects and intricate illustrations. Known for his incredible attention to detail, Nelius’ style is a perfect balance of precision and vibrancy, where every line and shade seems to tell its own story.

Now based in the lively village of Emyvale, Co. Monaghan, Nelius enjoys the company of his wife, Mary, and their seven grandchildren. Beyond his art, he has a rich variety of interests, gardening, travel, writing, and sports.

Nelius and Mary have relished the chance to explore the stunning landscapes of County Waterford and the historic city, and it is with great excitement that they brought this exhibition to the Index Gallery, where Nelius has had the opportunity to share his passion for art with our local community.
