MUSIC IN THE LARGE ROOM

October 10 – 8pm Wallfisch & O'Toole

Waterford Music Club presents a Duo Recital of Cello & 8-string Guitar.
Raphael Wallfisch (Cello) and Redmond O’Toole (Guitar) will perform arrangements of Spanish Music by Sor, de Falla, and Rodrigo, Brasilian Music by Villa-Lobos, alongside Romantic works from Schubert and Beethoven that breed new life and colour into these much loved works. Wallfisch will also perform one of JS Bach’s Suites for solo cello.
Raphael Wallfisch (UK) is one of the world’s leading cellists and this year celebrates his 60th birthday with concerts all over the world including a Proms recital in London. Since winning the Gaspar Cassadó International Cello Competition in Florence in 1977, he has enjoyed a world-wide career playing with top international orchestras. He is regularly invited to play at major festivals such as the BBC Proms, Edinburgh, Aldeburgh, Spoleto, Prades, Oslo and Schleswig Holstein. Teaching is one of Raphael’s passions, being in demand all over the world and holding the position of professor of cello at the Zürich Winterthur Konservatorium and at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Raphael has recorded nearly every major work for his instrument.
Classical guitarist Redmond O’Toole is the first to adapt to Paul Galbraith’s 8-string guitar, played in the position of a cello, which allows him an extension of range, colour and repertoire. Through his unorthodox playing style and committed musicianship he has emerged as one of the most innovative and exciting young guitarists in Europe. As well as solo performances in major festivals and concert seasons in Ireland, concerts have brought him around Europe and North and South America.  Collaborations include Mary Coughlan, the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet, the Callino Quartet, the Dublin Guitar Quartet, violinist Elizabeth Cooney, cellist Raphael Wallfisch, and poet Michael Longley. He has also been a regular guest guitarist with The Chieftains.
Redmond’s repertoire features many of his own arrangements of Baroque and Classical music previously unknown on guitar.  He is also highly interested in new music and has premiered works by major composers including Kevin Volans, John Mc Laughlin, Ian Wilson and Benjamin Dwyer.
