Coastguard Cultural Centre Friday June 24th 7.30pm.
This concert sees the coming together of three of Ireland’s and Finland’s most respected musicians for a special collaborative performance. Donegal’s Aidan O’Donnell (fiddles), Waterford’s Alan Colfer (guitars, harmonium, harmonica) and Helsinki’s Laura Hilska (voice, kantele, jouhikko) will explore and share their diverse musical heritage, from the Donegal fiddle to Finland’s 3-stringed horse-hair jouhikko, as well sharing songs from both countries’ rich vocal traditions.
Laura Hilska has travelled the world singing Finnish folk songs. She is also an accomplished player of the kantele (5-string Finnish dulcimer) and the jouhikko (horse-hair fiddle). Laura has studied at both Kaustinen Folk Music Academy and the Irish World Academy of Music at the University of Limerick.
From South West Donegal, 2010 TG4 Young Musician of the Year Aidan O’Donnell is one of Ireland’s leading fiddle players. He is best known for his work with his band Fidil, who released two critically acclaimed albums: ‘3’ in 2010 and ‘The Old Wheel of Fortune’ in 2011. He has also collaborated with Grammy award winning artists such as Tim O’Brien and Solo Cissokho, the kora maestro from Senegal.
Multi-instrumentalist Alan Colfer has played extensively throughout Ireland and Europe, and his repertoire draws influence from music the world over. He teaches at the Irish World Academy of Music in Limerick.
