Rachel Tynan - WHAT

WHAT Centre, University Hospital Waterford – Thursday 6th April @ 5.15pm

Artist Rachel Tynan presents WHAT’s annual talk entitled Making the Impossible Possible at the WHAT Centre for Arts and Health, University Hospital Waterford, on the 6th April at 5.15pm.

Rachel Tynan has worked with Helium, the national children’s arts and health organisation, since 2012. As Artist in Residence on both Cloudlands and Fireflies, Rachel has collaborated with teenagers in Temple Street Children’s University Hospital to develop work based on their interests and experiences. Her Masters in Design examined the effects illness has on the human body through textile, sculpture and body art. A solo exhibition Cut Throat at The Lab (2012) pushed her work beyond the fixed manifestations of installation with an explorative dance performance which further explored the experience of living with an illness.

She will be discussing her project Titans, an installation comprising a beautiful family of wooden figures with sound recordings of the teenagers’ stories hidden inside. From a Star Lady who heals, to a transforming cheeky Faun, the Titans will uncover another world that sheds light on the characters and their lives.

According to Claire Meaney, Acting Arts Director, WHAT “As part of our national remit, it is important for WHAT to look to other artists and projects for inspiration and to share and showcase projects to others interested in arts and health practice. We look forward to being inspired by Rachel’s work with children and teenagers in hospital.”

This event will begin at 5.15pm on Thursday 6th April 2017 in the WHAT Centre in the grounds of University Hospital Waterford. The talk will be preceded by a wine reception.
