An exhibition of painting, textiles and sculpture by Kathleen Delaney

L’Armoire; A large, often ornate cabinet or wardrobe. (French armoire, from Old French armaire, from Latin armrium, chest, from arma, tools). In L’Armoire, there is a dialogue between the inner and the outer worlds, the external reflecting the internal, a mirror in time. These works investigate the armour worn out into the world. Kathleen Delaney takes the image of a wardrobe merged and entwined with a living root system that serves to ground the object. In her series of drawing/collages she uses the written word along with a reworked image of a Chippendale press. Images of clothing appear in some of the pieces, where in others there are descriptions of clothing.

This exhibition is a dialogue of personal evolution, a discourse between past and present, between failure and success. The sculptural works feature aspects of clothing from another era, contemporised through the use of fabric. In Time Traveller, the artist uses Meret Oppenheim’s 1939 artwork with trussed up shoes, Ma Gouvernante (my Nurse) as a point of departure for bringing together the found objects. The ingredients in Time Traveller contain the essence of a fairytale with all of the darker facets. As with much of the artist’s work, the element of constraint is featured in the forms that she uses, whether in the corseted shapes and constructions, the structure of the house, the ribcage or the wardrobe (l’armoire).

Kathleen Delaney holds a BA Degree (hons) from NCAD and Masters in Arts and Heritage Management (hons) from WIT. Delaney has exhibited in a number of invited and juried exhibitions in Ireland inclusive of the RHA, The Banquet Exhibition, Iontas small works exhibition, Eigse Carlow and Aer Rianta Gateway to Arts. Her solo exhibition Soul Shrouds at the Berkeley Gallery (2010) was listed by Aidan Dunne as one of the visual art highlights of the year in the Irish Times. Delaney’s work can also be found in the collections of Wexford Co. Council, Bank of Ireland, The HSE, White’s Hotel, Waterford Healing Arts Trust, Wexford Healing Arts Trust and private collections in Ireland and abroad.
