Blackwater Angel, written and directed by Jim Nolan runs in the Garter Lane Theatre Friday 14th- Saturday 22nd November. Garter Lane Arts Centre with Waterford Institute of Technology presents Blackwater Angel for its first production in Waterford, the play debuted in The Abbey Theatre in 2001.
Set in county Waterford in the summer of 1666, Blackwater Angel is a fiction loosely based on the life of Plantation Irishman, Cromwelian soldier and reluctant healer; Valentine Greatrakes. Returning home from a triumphant visit to London Greatrakes is exhausted by and in awe of his gift and refuses to heal the hoards of afflicted who have overtaken his estate and clamour for his touch. The arrival of a company of English travelling players offers temporary diversion but when one of their number, the foundling Angel Landy is struck down by a mysterious ailment he is forced to confront the source of his unwanted gift.
