HARD GIRLS AT SOMA CONTEMPORARY GALLERY

SOMA Gallery, Lombard St., Waterford

Thursdays to Saturdays in Soma Contemporary Gallery, Lombard Street, Waterford – 1pm to 6pm.
‘HARD GIRLS’ is a celebration exhibition of surfaces and the superficial, the damaged and the disastrous. Fuelled by the aesthetics of ‘women-only gyms’, make-up tutorials, bodybuilder’s instagram feeds and a general sense of fatigue, this show exhibits new paintings, sculptures and videos, in dialogue with each other in a space functioning as a landscape of recovery.

Following Mehigan’s concerns with abjection, anxiety and queer femme aesthetics, HARD GIRLS functions as a dysphoric exploration of skin, intimacy, obsession and failure. Spiked cliffs, barriers, heels, drinks: “the wounded woman gets called a stereotype and sometimes she is. But sometimes she’s just true.”

Jennifer Mehigan (1988) from Cork, Ireland is a recent graduate of LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore. Initially trained in graphic design in Sydney, her work spans multiple platforms with a focus on painting. She has exhibited internationally, including a recent solo show ‘CESSPOOL’ at Shophouse 5 in Singapore and was part of Busan Biennale’s Asian Curatorial Exhibition. She currently lives and works in Cork. arts-council-logo-091-300x126-e1394575777814
