The Local Studies Department at Central Library is delighted to welcome local author Brian Kennedy who will facilitate a free six-week course on getting published. The course will take place from Wednesday 8 May – Wednesday 12 June from 6:30pm – 7:30pm in the Local Studies Room, Central Library.

Brian Kennedy: Born in Waterford in 1969 Brian Kennedy is one of Waterford’s most prolific writers with twelve books to his name. His first book, Confessions of an Exeter City Nut was published in 2004. Brian’s other publications include  Singing the Blues, One flew Over the Crossbar, Blue White & Dynamite and Just Follow the Floodlights which went to no.1 on the English Football League Best-Sellers List on Amazon.co.uk

Introduction. The dos & don’ts of publishing. Market research – know your market. Taking the first steps of writing your book. Tricks of the trade.
Week 2.
To publish or self publish? Getting your book up to scratch . Proofreading. Editing and overcoming obstacles.
Week 3.
Approaching literary agents. Submitting your book to publishers ( the dos and don’ts) Dealing with rejection letters and how to stay positive.
Week 4.
The world of self publishing. Raising money for your book. Having a book launch . Bring your own publicist. Geting a publishing contest and working with a publisher. Working with a publicist.
Week 5.
Marketing your book. Getting it on bookshelves. Dealing with invoices, reprints and distribution and social media.
Week 6.
Your book and Recap of everything, that has been learned and going forward with a positive can-do attitude to writing and publishing your book.
