In this three-day introduction to botanical watercolour painting, award-winning artist, Mary Dillon, will guide you through her process of capturing the very essence of the plant – its beauty, frailty, strength and intimacy, in a scientifically truthful manner. This workshop is suitable for newcomers to botanical art, and also provides lots of new tips for more advanced artists.

In this workshop you will be shown a method of watercolour painting using autumn-winter botanical art subjects.

You will learn fundamental artistic concepts about colour, light, form and texture, as well as being introduced to various watercolour techniques. Starting with sketching, dry-brush techniques and the application of different washes, you will then be shown how to approach tone and form. You will also learn how to set up your palette and capture colour, light and transparency. Mary will also explain what materials are best to work with and will demonstrate how to use them. Students will receive individual critiques and practical advice at all stages of their watercolour painting process.
