Next week sees the premiere of Blackbird, a play that is sure to provoke controversy and have everyone talking, at Theatre Royal.
A play of the moment, Blackbird is the story of Una and Ray, whose relationship fifteen years ago had a profound and devastating effect on both of their lives. They hadn’t set eyes on each other since. Now, in a tense confrontation the past returns to torment them as they unravel their deeply conflicted feelings for each other. Revelations and recriminations fly as this lacerating and controversial story of betrayal, abandonment and lust unfolds. This is sure to be a thought-provoking and challenging night at the theatre that will leave audiences questioning their preconceptions and with the realisation that little in life is ever black-and-white.
Blackbird features Anthony Brophy, whom audiences will recognise from The Tudors, and British actress Maria Guiver. The piece is directed by Ben Barnes, former Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre and currently Artistic Director of Theatre Royal. Winner of the Olivier Award for Best Play, Blackbird is a complex portrayal of two people whose damaged lives are inextricably intertwined.
This production represents a major new collaboration between Theatre Royal and Central Arts, driven by a determination to bring professional theatre production back to the City. It is the follow-up to the popular Central Arts / Ground Floor production of The Collector and recent Theatre Royal Productions My Real Life by Eoin Colfer (Waterford, Wexford, National Tour, Edinburgh Fringe 2017) and Samuel Beckett’s Footfalls and Krapp’s Last Tape. It is funded by Waterford City and County Council.
Waterford audiences can catch Blackbird’s premiere at Theatre Royal from Thursday June 28 to Saturday June 30; with the production to embark on a major national tour later in the year.
