Wallaroo Playschool Child and Family Project (established in 2005) supports people living in Direct Provision by providing preschool, afterschool and summer camps and collaborating with other voluntary organisations working with International Protection Applicants. Part funded by the HSE Social Inclusion Fund our aim is to ameliorate the situation of people living in Direct Provision Centres in Cork.
During the last few years Direct Provision Centres have been full to capacity and newer International Protection applicants have been offered Emergency Accommodation or nothing at all, sometimes sleeping at the airport or reporting as homeless so they can find shelter for the night. At present there are 150 people living in communal tents in Athlone. People in emergency accommodation have much less access facilities than those in Direct Provision Centres. Through its contacts in the Asylum Support Network (made up of voluntary and non-statutory organisations) Wallaroo Playschool Child and Family Project will ensure that all funds raised from this art sale will go directly to those in most need at this time of year.
Wallaroo Playschool and after-school service is in St Lukes, on the northside of Cork City. Established in 1985, it is a non-profit making and community-oriented organisation delivering the full-range of childcare services. Wallaroo creates a supportive environment that encourages children’s capacities for trust, autonomy, initiative, empathy, and self-confidence. It has pioneered diversity and equality in Irish childcare programmes since 1985.
