FUND-IT TARGET REACHED FOR NEW STREET GARDENS

UPDATE: New Street Gardens would like to thank all of those who contributed to the recent Fund-It campaign. The Gardens are up and running, but if you would still like to give us a hand, in any way or form, come down and talk to the crew there – there is always something to do!

The New Street Garden project’s aim is to give an open space, filled with nature, to the community of Ireland’s oldest City. It is right in the retail heart of Waterford and sits on a site once occupied by houses including the very space where Edmund Rice founded his 1st school. It is about bringing greenery and life back into a vacant and disused space and creating a programme of events for everyone to enjoy.

The New Street Garden is also about creating a sense of endeavour and community. To date well over a thousand individuals have came down and given a hand, or a plant or a cup of coffee so as to contribute to this exciting shared venture. People living and working in the area, local schools, community, horticultural and arts groups have been involved at different stages of the garden build. This sense of ownership is creating a great sense positivity and pride in the community, the city and its inhabitants. Local businesses, gardening groups and individuals, have up until now, been kind enough to sponsor materials and guidance which has helped get this project off the ground. People from all corners of the community have been helping gather the different elements needed to build the park such as electrics, paths etc.

But now….the New Street Garden has reached a stage where it needs your help and to this end it has embarked on a ‘Fund It’ campaign. It is hoped to raise €10,000 to enable it get the remaining supplies, tools and materials needed to finish the park and maintain it throughout the five month programme of events. These include movies with live accompaniment, theatre, live gigs, guest DJ sets, family and sport activities, Art exhibitions etc.

If you have a fiver, a tenner or even more that you could put towards this wonderful amenity you will help it blossom from a garden of the imagination into a genuine garden of delight! Your help will enable and empower the dreams of the many people who came to this derelict piece of scrubland and literally sowed the seeds of community back into the City’s own soil.
