After a troubling start to film in Ireland in 2018, with the sad news that FilmBase has shut its doors after 32 years of service and our own recent difficulties in having our funding cut by 80% , we are delighted to announce that the 12th Waterford Film Festival will be going ahead.

The team at the Waterford Film Festival are firm believers that creativity is spurred on in the face of adversity, and it is with this news we are delighted to announce that this year’s festival is moving to the creative hub of Waterford that is Central Arts.

This years festival will be running between Nov 30- 2 Dec in Central Arts, Central Hall, 123a Parade Quay, Waterford, Ireland! In the heart of Waterford’s historic Viking Triangle.

Central Arts was founded by John & Ciara O Connell in 2014. It is based in Central Hall and will provide an 80 seat theatre venue for this years event.  The two committed and experienced directors are supported by a team of active and enthusiastic volunteers with a wide variety of skills and specialisations. Central Arts provides an incubation space whereby our colleagues in the arts, theatre, music, festivals and education can make work and find an audience. Speaking about hosting the Film Festival, founder of the Central Arts John O’ Connell said;

“We’re delighted to come on Board for this year and throw in our support behind the Festival. We’ve a deep love for film here at Central Arts, from our film club Central Cinema to the many independent film-makers we’ve worked with, so getting to host the Festival is exciting for us, especially in a year that I know the guys have loads of interesting plans and ideas. I think through our contribution this year, we have the opportunity to bring something new to the offering and really have some fun with it!”

Film Festival Director , Stephen Byrne  talking about the move to Central Arts;

“We are looking forward to working with the team at Central Arts and excited to develop the festival with them and to work on new ideas to bring something new and different to the annual event”.

The festival is now open for it’s two main competitions running this year for film and screenplays with prizes sponsored by Waterford Crystal, FilmLab and Waterford City and County Council.

We are now  accepting online submissions on the Film Freeway platform; https://filmfreeway.com/WaterfordFilmFestival  Film Freeway is the number 1 trusted online platform for filmmakers and festivals.
