TimeWeavers — Inclusive, Genre-bending Music Theatre at the 10th Scene + Heard Festival in Smock Alley
Following their retrospective at GOMA Gallery of Modern Art in Waterford in January, Lunatraktors will debut their new show TimeWeavers at the Scene + Heard festival of new theatre in Smock Alley at 2pm on February 28th. These award-winning experimental folk artists — dancer / choreographer Carli Jefferson (she/they) and vocalist / researcher Clair Le Couteur (they/them) — are known internationally for their genre-bending, trans-disciplinary work. “Lunatraktors are simply different.” (Bernard Clarke, RTÉ Lyric FM). They combine music, dance, visual arts, theatre, workshops and heritage events, collaborating with everyone from music festivals to museums. Co-produced with veteran inclusive theatre maker Heather Rose, TimeWeavers is the duo’s most accessible work to date: “So many people have difficulty enjoying traditional shows,” Carli and Clair say. “The sound at gigs is too loud, they’re on too late. Sitting still in a theatre seat, you can feel trapped. We wanted to make something for weirdos like us — LGBTQ+ people, disabled people, neurodiverse families. A show where people can express themselves.”
A Folktronica Voyage to the Mists of Time
Led by two tap-dancing tour guides, audiences of all ages are invited on a folktronica voyage deep into the Mists of Time. The journey is powered by somatic sound from the performers and audience — the sounds everyone can make with their bodies and voices. “We want to show families that everyone can enjoy making music together,” Lunatraktors say. “You don’t need fancy gear or special skills to join in. Clapping, humming and stamping are just as great as they were in the Stone Age.” The R&D for TimeWeavers, funded by Creative Ireland and Waterford Council, focused on the creative wellbeing benefits of somatic sound. Recent research underscores the wide benefits of communal music for social, emotional and bodily wellbeing. “We believe everyone should feel included and empowered by music. We want everybody involved. The folk tradition is jam-packed with weird and amazing songs we can all share. Every single body and voice is valuable. No matter your age, experience or physical needs, you can make some funky grooves!”
