THE TAPESTRY ROOM – KATHI BURKE

GARTER LANE ARTS CENTRE, 25TH MAY – 17TH AUGUST 2024 11 AM – 5.30 PM TUES – SAT

This exhibition explores the legend of Loftus Hall reimagined by Kathi Burke who seeks to honour the most haunted house in Ireland through a personal response to the devil’s fabled appearance during a card game there in 1785.

Inspired by Loftus Hall, “the most haunted house in Ireland,” The Tapestry Room exhibition is a personal response to its dark history, particularly the fabled appearance of the devil during a card game in 1785. Central to this narrative is Anne Tottenham, who, after recognizing the devil’s cloven feet, was confined to the tapestry room, where she succumbed to madness.

Returning to Waterford after fifteen years, Kathi explores themes of isolation, infatuation, and introspection through artworks that blend folklore with contemporary perspectives. The exhibition space, resembling an isolated teenager’s bedroom, features suspended woven blankets and textile collages. These pieces draw from motifs found in Loftus Hall and reference playing cards, tarot, alchemy, astrology, and religion, tools we use to understand fate.

The exhibition melds storytelling with visual art, inviting viewers to engage with the artworks and reflect on their own dreams and nightmares, creating an accessible and thought-provoking experience for all ages.
