Observing Faith: Waterford
Photographic exhibition of works by John Foley from the ongoing, Creative Ireland funded, ‘Observing Faith: Waterford’ project. This project seeks to explore the variety of communities and groups within Waterford who are inspired creatively by their religious and spiritual beliefs and heritage. ‘Observing Faith: Waterford’ is an extension of the Waterford Gallery of Art’s exhibition, ‘Faith in the Process’ investigation the connections between Irish Art and its association to religious and spiritual ideas, motifs and means of production – from Dolmen, folklore, manuscripts, stained glass and more.
Artist biography:
John Foley is a documentary photographer based in Dublin and originally from Waterford.
His photographic practice is rooted in the exploration of rituals, traditions, and collective memory in Ireland. Foley notes: “I am particularly drawn to events in which tradition and modernity intersect such as seasonal festivals and sites of pilgrimage and worship.”
He is an active committee member of the IOVA photography collective contributing to the organisation of and participation in multiple exhibitions in Dublin. His personal work has been exhibited in group shows across Ireland and is held in both public and private collections.
