Thursday 26 September 2013 Large Room City Hall – 8pm

Tom Dunn (viola) & the Callino String Quartet

Waterford~Music open their 72nd season of 8 International Chamber Music Concerts in the Large~Room with the Viola Quintets of Mozart (No. 4 KV 516) and Mendelssohn (No. 1), the former with it’s dark and melancholic mood and the latter emotionally intense. Performed by Tom Dunn and the Callino Quartet, who will also play Janáček’s first string quartet, which was inspired by Tolstoy’s novella The Kreutzer Sonata, based on Beethoven’s violin sonata of the same name.

Tom Dunn

The Callino String Quartet, internationally sought after since it was formed at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in 1999, is named after the Callino ms. of the first notated Irish air ‘Cailin cois tSuir a me’  (Girl by the River Suir). After their performance of Janacek’s Quartet nr 1, Tom Dunn (UK), presently co-principal Viola in the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, will join them in quintets by Mendelssohn and Mozart, whose string quintets belong to his greatest works.

The viola, this beautiful deep violin, has always enthralled composers and listeners, in classical but also in pop music.

Door tickets: €18/€5 (students).

Season ticket: Couple €140 (8 concerts for 4); Single €90 (8 for 5); Student €25 (8 for 5). All tickets include interval soft drinks.
