La La Land (PG)

Garter Lane Arts Centre, Sunday 1st October at 7:30pm

lalalandAn ambitious jazz pianist (Ryan Gosling) and an aspiring actress (Emma Stone) fall in love while pursuing their dreams of stardom, in this dazzlingly stylized homage to the classic Hollywood musical from Whiplash director Damien Chazelle. Drawing upon studio-era spectacle, La La Land ushers the musical into the 21st century in all its brightly coloured, anamorphic splendour, telling the story of two star-crossed young dreamers determined to make it big on the silver screen. It’s either stardom or bust!

Dubliners’ Women  Adapted From James Joyce’s Dubliners

Garter Lane arts Centre, 5 October at 8:00pm

Dubliner's womenImmerse yourself in the hidden worlds of Eveline, Clay and The Boarding House, three short stories by one of the 20th Century’s greatest writers, James Joyce. Dubliners’ Women shines a light on the female narratives in Joyce’s iconic collection of stories, and their resonances with Ireland today.

“A bell clanged upon her heart. She felt him seize her hand: Come! All the seas of the world tumbled about her heart. He was drawing her into them: he would drown her” Eveline

Mrs. Mooney dealt with moral problems as a cleaver deals with meat: and in this case she had made up her mind” The Boarding House

“They led her to the table amid laughing and joking and she put her hand out in the air as she was told to do. She moved her hand about here and there in the air and descended on one of the saucers. She felt a soft wet substance with her fingers and was surprised that nobody spoke or took off her bandage.” Clay

“[This] production of three of Joyce’s Dubliners is a credit to the great man…A delicate, balanced and wistful evening of theatre…[Joyce] would have felt his immortal stories well served by this production, lit as well as it is directed and played’ THE SUNDAY INDEPENDENT

Sage femme the MidwifeDirector Martin Provost (Violette, Seraphine) unites two of Frances favourite actors in his tender comedy drama about female friendship and rediscovery. Catherines Deneuve and Frot play very different women whose shaky reconnection after a number of decades allows them both to learn valuable life lessons from one another. Claire (Frot) is the conscientious Midwife of the title, a single mother whose reservations and self-restraint have left her living an isolated life. Until the day her deceased fathers ex girlfriend makes contact. Beatrice (Deneuve) is a free spirited, professional gambler who wishes to reconnect with Claires father. Shocked at the news that he has passed away she implants herself into Claire’s life instead, bringing chaos, joy and memories of happier times.
