Music at the Museum presents Poet, Composer & Photographer, Sunday 14th April at 12.30 pm
In the second Sunday series of lunchtime concerts, Music at the Museum is delighted to present Watersong, on Sunday 14th April at 12.30 pm. Poet Mark Roper, composer Eric Sweeney and photographer Paddy Dwan come together to celebrate the energy and power of water through poetry and prose readings, accompanied by improvised music on keyboard and set to photographic images.
Roper’s readings will include pieces from The River Book, Roper and Dwan’s much-loved book about the River Suir; a selection of poems from the recent collection A Gather Of Shadow, and an essay called Halcyon which has earned much praise. In a review of A Gather Of Shadow for Acumen magazine, Myra Schneider said: “Mark Roper’s writing sends that shiver down my spine which is the sign of true poetry. His images have become part of my consciousness. What greater praise could I give to this book?”
Eric Sweeney and Mark Roper have collaborated on many projects over the past two years. They have travelled the south of Ireland with their highly acclaimed poetry and music recitals; produced a piece for Come the Sails, performed during the Tall Ships Festival 2011, and written an opera entitled The Invader, due to go into production in 2014. In 2012, they facilitated a Waterford City Council funded Poetry and Music Composition Programme in Waterford secondary schools, and, working with Fado Productions, have secured funding from same to again work with first and transition year students in music and poetry composition. Their creativity, energy and dedication to their art are boundless.
Paddy Dwan has deservedly gathered many plaudits for his photography. His stunning images from ‘The River Book’, and the soon to be released ‘Backstrand’ , captured in and around Waterford and environs, ensure that this concert will offer a rare feast for the senses.
