SUMMARY:CIARA O’CONNOR: BRAZEN
DESCRIPTION:FOH Garter Lane Arts Centre\, 6th August – 26th October 2022\nCiara O’Connor is a Kerry based visual artist who works with textiles and embroidery.\nHer work is figurative and deals with themes of identity\, nostalgia\, relationships\, and feminism.\nShe uses a combination of hand stitching\, free motion embroidery and raw-edged appliqué to create her thread drawings. The slow\, meditative nature of hand stitching allows time to become intimately connected with what she is making. The speed and fluidity of machine stitching allows for a more intuitive\, expressive outcome and instant gratification. They are equally important to her.\nShe uses vintage fabrics or material that she has a personal connection to. She works from both sides of the fabric. This enables her to manipulate the thread to control mark making.\nWhen she stitches\, she is aware of how her actions mirror those of her mother\, her grandmother and others that have gone before her. She relishes that connection. She works in a medium associated with femininity and domestic labour\, but to her it represents her desire to break free from those same preconceptions and constraints.\nBrazen\nAs a young girl\, the word brazen had negative connotations for O’Connor. It conjured up images of the brazen hussy\, the jezebel\, a woman without shame. Bold and brash with loose morals. She did and said as she pleased. A woman who loved herself.\nUpon mature reflection\, O’Connor knows examines this to be a doctrine of control.\n‘Brazen’ is a collection of stories about the theft of consent and the subsequent practice of emotional repair. It is about resilience\, defying patriarchal ideology\, self-forgiveness and learning to silence shame.\nThe fabrics used in the making of this work are part of O’Connor’s personal heritage. Every fabric and stitch choice are carefully considered. Some stitches fortify\, some protect and some house secrets.\nThis is a woman’s work.\nFAIRE magazine online journal:\nhttps://www.fairepress.com/journal/ciara-oconnor\nInstagram: thewitchthread\nGarter Lane Arts Centre\, O’Connell Street\, Waterford \nBox Office: +353 51 855038\nAdmin: +353 51 877153\nTicket Sales: ticket@garterlane.ie\nGeneral Enquiries: admin@garterlane.ie \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:BACKSTAGE@THEROYAL PRESENTS ASHLEY SHEEHAN & ORAN BYRNE
DESCRIPTION:Theatre Royal\, 15th July\, 8.30pm\nAshley Sheehan has spent the lockdown writing and recording what will be the sixth studio album under the banner of Fighting  Spiders. The album is due for a vinyl release sometime this summer.  Himself and the Spiders shall be re-embarking on the Irish tour that was cut short after its first show in Whelan’s at the start of the first lockdown\, over 2 years ago. With a new band and a new album on the way Ashley and Co are eager to be back out there doing those long-awaited gigs.\nOran Byrne is a singer-songwriter based in Waterford\, Ireland. Byrne quickly exploded onto the Waterford music scene in 2021 with his hit single ‘Paranoia’. After releasing four singles consecutively throughout 2021\, Byrne released his debut album ‘Moving Forward’ on May 6th\, 2022 – an eight-track album which explores themes such as fear\, loneliness\, and abandonment\, accompanied by rich\, uplifting\, upbeat\, and sometimes\, gloomy\, haunting melodies. His biggest influences both musically and lyrically are The Beatles and Arctic Monkeys. This is particularly evident in his song writing\, as he tends to embrace the rich harmonies that defined The Beatles in his own music\, coupled with the softly sung poetic lyrics that John Lennon and Alex Turner are noted for.\nTickets €15\nTheatre Royal Waterford\, 051 874402 \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:ENGRAMS | GOMA STUDIO ARTISTS AT THEATRE ROYAL
DESCRIPTION:Theatre Royal\, 16 June to 27 August 2022\nAn Engram is a physical trace of memory within the brain…\nENGRAMS is an exhibition of works from the GOMA studio artists and is a response to their experience of isolation and resilience throughout the past two years of the pandemic. ENGRAMS is an expression of the crisis of one of the major social upheavals of our time and is an opportunity to reflect on our collective experience through the arts.\nCovid-19 severely affected the cultural sector. Many artists and creatives lost months of work or income. Throughout all this time\, the mission of GOMA has remained unchanged; we exist to provide and promote a creative hub\, visibility\, and to facilitate the collaboration of arts\, culture and community.\nParticipating artists: Ruth Flynn\, Joseph Fogarty\, Ben Hennessy\, Anne McDonnell\, Enda Moran\, Christine O’Brien\, Seamus O’Brien\, Emer Powell\, Una Walsh and Jena Wade.\nhttp://www.gomawaterford.ie \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:BITING LIGHTNING | SHANE O’DRISCOLL
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is a collection of pieces created in the last year\, ranging from hand printed works to sculptural pieces. Having limited access to my studio in the past two years has forced me to explore different mediums in my practice and to embrace new thoughts and actions.\nShane O’Driscoll is a visual artist who practices mainly in printmaking.\nThe art of balance informs his work. Limited elements ranging from the geometric to the textured are carefully positioned against a flat back-ground. Each motif is distinctive in its own right but it also enhances and resonates with those around\, creating an element of tension or frisson across the composition.\nShane studied Visual Communications and is a member of Cork Printmakers and Backwater Artists Group. He also creates large scale murals in both city and rural settings. He has exhibited his work internationally and throughout Ireland. Shane has work in the the permanent collection of The National Gallery of Ireland\, Trinity College Dublin\, Glucksman Museum UCC\, UCD\, as well as the OPW State Art Collection.\nGOMA Gallery of Modern Art\n6 Lombard Street\, Waterford.\nX91 F2XP\n9 June – 23 July 2022\nTues to Sat 12 noon to 5pm\nAdmission Free \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:BOOK NOW! EOS Screening: Pissarro Father of Modern Impressionism – Garter Lane
DESCRIPTION:Without Camille Pissarro\, there is no Impressionist movement. He is rightfully known as the father of Impressionism.\nIt was a dramatic path that Pissarro followed\, and throughout it all he wrote extensively to his family. It is through these intimate and revealing letters that this gripping film reveals Pissarro’s life and work.\nBorn in the West Indies\, Pissarro found his passion in paint as a young man in Paris\, and by the age of 43 had corralled a group of enthusiastic artists into a new collective. Their first show was scorned by the critics\, but the group had acquired a new name: the Impressionists. For the next 40 years Pissarro was the driving force behind what has today become the world’s favourite artistic movement.\nThe Ashmolean Museum has a long tradition of excellence. As the UK’s first ever public museum (it opened its doors in May 1683) it houses a wonderfully rich collection\, including the remarkable Pissarro archive. With exclusive access to most extensive archive of any Impressionist painter\, and to the first major Pissarro retrospective in four decades\, this film explores and highlights the enthralling and hugely important biography and output of an incredible artist.\nDIRECTED BY DAVID BICKERSTAFF \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…
