SUMMARY:FILM: LE HAVRE (with Saint Herblain Cultural and Language Exchange Present)
DESCRIPTION:Waterford Gallery of Art. Wednesday 18th January 2023. Reception at 18:15\nWaterford – Saint Herblain Cultural and Language Exchange Present: LE HAVRE. “Le Havre” is set in the French Port City where many of the cargoes are human\, illegal immigrants arriving from Africa. The Police find a container filled with illegal immigrants and a young boy slips under their arms and runs away. The movie is as loveable as a silent comedy which it could have been. It takes place in a world that seems cruel and heartless. There is nothing cynical or cheap about this film. It tells a good story with clear eyes and a level gaze\, which we think you will find uplifting. A “Feel Good” French Comedy Film with English sub titles.\nWaterford Gallery of Art\, 31-32 O’Connell Street\, Waterford. Reception: 18:15. Guided Tour of the Gallery 18:30. Film starts at 19:00\nContribution of €15.00 which includes wine\, nibbles and chocolates. Presented with the support of the French Embassy in Ireland and Institut Francais \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:‘EARTHBOUND’ BY PASCAL UNGERER AT GOMA
DESCRIPTION:GOMA\, Thursday 13th October – Sunday 27th of November 2022\nGOMA are delighted to invite you to the opening of Pascal Ungerer’s solo exhibition titled Earthbound.\nOfficial launch with live music – 13th October at 6pm.\nExhibition continues until the 27th of November.\nFree event | All welcome.\nAs an artist Pascal is interested in peoples connection to place and land and the wider perception of the natural or built environment and the interrelationship between these two contrasting spaces.\nHis most recent painting work looks at liminal landscapes on the margins of human habitation\, places that are temporal with a cyclical flux between abandonment and habitation.\nPascal says he is often drawn to unusual structures or topographies as well as places that have storied\, hidden or layered histories. ‘For me\, many of these places represent a kind of ‘otherness’ in a sometimes bleak and foreboding environment. Most of my paintings are fictional landscapes where I amalgamate different places and ideas into a metaphorical space to reflect upon wider socio-geographic issues\, but my paintings are also intrinsically linked to the places and stories that have inspired them.’ This exhibition – Trace Elements – will showcase some exciting new work by Ungerer in a show that brings together many of Pascal’s interests\, in pensive\, foreboding and empty landscapes as well as abandoned industrial infrastructure\, which he says is ‘emblematic of an architecture of the periphery because of its obsolescence\, marginality and alterity. ‘\nARTIST BIOGRAPHY\nPascal Ungerer is a visual artist originally from West Cork. He holds an Honours Degree in Fine Fine Art from the Crawford College of Art in Design. In 2018 he completed a scholarship funded Masters on the prestigious MFA programme at Goldsmiths University London.\nThough he has a background in lens based media Pascal has focused on developing a painting practice over recent years.\nHe has exhibited his work extensively throughout Europe – as well as in North America and Asia – including Blackburn Museum\, CICA Museum South Korea\, Roman Road Gallery London and the Visual Center for Contemporary Art\, Ireland.\nHe has won and been shortlisted for many awards such as the Alliance Franciase de Cork Exhibition Award\, the Bloomberg New Contemporaries\, The Solo Award\, The Alpine Fellowship\, The Sunny Art Prize\, The ACS Studio Prize and the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize.\nHe has received funding awards and bursaries from the Arts Council of Ireland\, Cork County Council\, Cork City Council\, Culture Ireland and Goldsmiths University London.\nHis work is held in numerous private collections in Ireland\, the UK\, the US\, France\, Germany and Switzerland.\n \nGOMA Gallery of Modern Art\, 6 Lombard Street\, Waterford.\n0871961923\ngomawaterford@gmail.com \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:EVGENIYA MARTIROSYAN IN CONVERSATION WITH CHRIS HURLEY
DESCRIPTION:GOMA Gallery of Modern Art\, 22nd September 2022 at 1pm until 2pm\nAdmission –  Free\nGOMA is delighted to invite you to Evgeniya Martirosyan artist talk where she will be in conversation with Chris Hurley.\nEvgeniya Martirosyan and Chris Hurley will give a presentation on the development of the ‘To Ashes’ body of work currently on exhibition with GOMA\, from the initial ideas and testing to the logistics of working with fire and ash. They will also discuss the future evolution of the pieces.\nEvgeniya Martirosyan’s new body of work ‘To Ashes’ is a meditation on mortality\, impermanence and loss. The artist draws from the symbolism of fire and ash\, materials closely associated with death and destruction\, but also leading to a new cycle of creation. Used family beds\, objects which hold memories of life\, dreams and struggles\, were set on fire and reduced to debris. Charred and fragmented bed carcasses also allude to war\, displacement and the aftermath of a disaster\, coincidentally resonating with current events.\nThe work combines sculptural detritus with moving image\, developed from the artist’s continuous experimentation with the material and visual qualities of fire and ash. As the fire gradually reduces the objects to ash\, this formless and featureless substance is activated again by the caressing artist’s hand. The tactile gesture creates an emotionally charged atmosphere\, inviting the viewer to reflect on the precariousness of life.\n‘The sense of fragility is immediate and haunting… Ash now becomes pure memory matter\, teeming with its own vibrant ghost life.’\nMax Le Cain\nGOMA Gallery of Modern Art\, 6 Lombard Street\, Waterford\nContact –  gomawatewrford@gmail.com\nTel – 0871961923 \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:WARD – BACKSTAGE@THEROYAL
DESCRIPTION:Theatre Royal\, 13th August 2022\, 8pm\nBackstage@TheRoyal & Egg Twelve Records\nWard is the alias of Sean Ward\, an 18-year-old multi-instrumentalist and producer from Waterford. Only producing music for under 2 years\, the ‘one-stop-shop’ artist has progressed rapidly\, quickly turning himself into an artist who is regularly churning out radio ready pieces of bedroom pop. Signing to Waterford’s independent Egg Twelve Records in early 2020\,  ‘In Two Minds’ and ‘Childsplay’ garnered huge support across National\, Dublin and Regional radio stations.  The first track of the EP ‘Childsplay’ made it into the Top Ten Irish Breakers Chart as well as securing features across Hot Press\, Goldenplec and many more.\nWard’s previous single ‘In Two Minds’ was crowned ‘Track of the Week’ on RTE 2FM and Spin South West alongside features in music bloggers and tastemakers such as District Magazine\, Nialler9’s Irish tracks of the week\, Thin Air\, Hot Press and Goldenplec.com and many more.\n‘Strawberry Jam’ is the debut EP from young Irish musician Ward. It is a tribute to summer times\, and the relationships built up and broken down within them. The EP features groovy basslines to match heavy drum grooves\, contrasted by light and danceable keys\, all complemented by dashes of guitar goodness deposited throughout the running time. This instrumentation is used as the canvas for the catchy melodies and punchy lyrics that Ward delivers on each track.\n€15.50\, https://theatreroyal.ie/event/ward/ 051 874402\nThe Theatre Royal\, The Mall\, Waterford \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Backstage@The Royal Presents Paul J. Bolger & The Poor Relations Feat Tadhg Williams
DESCRIPTION:Theatre Royal\, 12th August 2022\, 8.30pm\nPaul J. Bolger has not rested on his laurels since releasing his self-titled album on Canadian label Wolfe Island Records in the summer of 2020. He’s back with a collection of 10 fiery\, emotional and vaguely personal songs which were recorded in Ireland under the guiding eyes and ears of producer / guitar maestro Dave Molloy. Paul wanted to widen his musical approach but work with a smaller group of musicians and Molloy has helped him do just that. Recorded The Cellar Club\, Newry in between other creative projects Paul found himself knee deep in\, Hard Truth was a slow grower.\nFour of the ten songs were previously released on a limited-edition EP in 2018 and the new remixed and remastered versions on here feature the wonderful vocals of Della Mannion. The album also showcases the mighty talents of Ron O’Flynn (bass)\, Michael Black (drums / percussion) and pianist Cathleen Flynn creating a blend of Irish vibe and rootsy rock and roll that give PJB’s songs a fresh urgency and ambition. “I wanted to widen my sound on Hard Truth with a smaller band\,” says Paul. “As my last effort was a big team\, yet intimate\, Canadian / Irish / American affair\, I wanted to see how far I could push these songs with fewer people performing. If my first record was a slightly keyboard driven whisper\, then Hard Truth is an audacious guitar led shout.” Special guests on the album are Horslip’s Barry Devlin on vocals and Rónán Ó Snodaigh from Kíla on bodhrán.\n·        €15\, https://theatreroyal.ie/event/paul-j-bolger-the-poor-relations/ 051 874402\nThe Theatre Royal\, The Mall Waterford. \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:WEAREFETISHISTS
DESCRIPTION:Garter Lane Arts Centre\, Saturdayday 6th August – Tuesday 27th September 2022\nWEAREFETISHISTS : a group show/exhibition curated by James Merrigan will be exhibited at Garter Lane (Gallery) X91 DX57\nfrom Aug 6th – Sept 27th.\nIn 2019\, Waterford-based artist and art critic James Merrigan\, invited nine artists to contribute to an experimental process\, which involved the nine artists submitting images and drawings for screen-printing in Merrigan’s *Small Night Projects. The culmination of that two year process takes the form of a dynamic exhibition at Garter Lane Arts Centre. The exhibition presents a suite of large-scale prints\, zines and a letter addressed to the nine artists\, questioning ideas of ownership through the psychoanalytic object of the fetish.\nArtists: Ursula Burke\, Marian Balfe\, Kian Benson Bailes\, Austin Hearne\, Locky Morris\, Fiona Reilly\, Emma Roche\, Celine Sheridan\, Brian Teeling\n*Small Night Projects\nThrough Small Night Projects artist and critic James Merrigan commissions and invites artists to participate in collaborative modes and models of exchange and production that look beneath the official and visible practice of the artist. What he has found beneath artists’ practices is open and experimental processes and expressions that never see the light of day due to a concern that any deviation outside the norm of their work would devalue the consistency of their visible practice. It is this place of vulnerability\, becoming and incompleteness\, what he has described to previous collaborators as “liveliness”\, that he wants to bring to the surface as a valuable and intrinsic part of the artist’s worth. Independent from commercial printers and graphic designers\, Small Night produces within and beyond the limits of screen-printed ink on paper. There are no middle-person expenses or directives – just the raw artist involved in a permissible collaboration. SMALLNIGHT.ORG\n“Dear Artists.\nAs you already know\, the title of this thing we are doing together — WEAREFETISHISTS — is something we have been circling for two years. The circling was due mostly to COVID\, when delays & cancellations spaghettified everything. The more I circled without taking a right-angled turn towards the centre\, towards some made-up deadline\, the more I began to realise that all this circling can be defined by a word found within the word pileup that is WEAREFETISHISTS.\nDon’t know if you know this\, but there’s this psychoanalytical term called “fetishistic disavowal”\, defined in distance or over-proximity. It’s something like this: when you lose someone you love\, the loss of that love is sometimes put onto another object\, inanimate or alive. The festishistic object bears the grief\, desire or anxiety you are having to avoid confronting head-on. It’s a pathological transfer\, or detour\, based on distance & loss. Very Freudian. But there’s also another way to define the fetish\, as the fear of getting too close to the object of your desire\, so you put up a barrier in the form of\, let’s say\, an image\, that becomes an unconsummated fantasy. You fantasise about touching reality\, but it’s a reality you are afraid to touch. Instagram!\nThe more and more I think about what has happened over the last two years\, the Zoom distancing\, the slowing & stretching out of art making\, the fetish\, in relation to art\, or intrinsic to being an artist\, makes more sense to me. If you think about the structure & process of WEAREFETISHISTS\, the way I have ended up screen-printing your drawings & images\, it’s completely fetishistic.\nThing is\, two years ago I asked all nine of you if you’d be interested in submitting images or drawings of your work for screen-printing. You said yes\, & I was really grateful. Sure\, it was a weird collaboration\, in that I was “providing a service” (In Fiona R’s words). But during the circling my relationship with your images became more deep-seated. Celine S mentioned during one phone conversation that\, in so many words\, she had severed ownership with the drawings she submitted. Probably because they had gone through a process that she felt dissociated from\, both from her hand or her judgment. She had released them into my care to become something else. Fucking weird.\nFrom my perspective\, I have felt a little perverted during the process. In that I was taking your work & having my way with it\, in some instances getting high on the results of the transformation from drawings or photographs into silkscreens. That’s weird\, isn’t it? I was also thinking about the exhibition of the work. Who was really exhibiting? You or me? I have no desire to exhibit; perhaps make exhibitions\, yes\, but not become an art object again. This is where the fetish breeds\, in the space between disavowal (Who owns the work? Who is exhibiting the work?) & attachment (It’s my work not theirs!). The fetish also exists in the anxious & fearful space of avoidance. The fetish object helps maintain a distance from the real object of desire.\nWhat I mean by becoming an art object is linked to a strange thought I had the other day about being an artist in the lifeworld. If you think about it\, artists become art objects\, that’s their fate. The moment they leave the lively process of their studio with their art objects in hand for the public to gawk at\, they become objects. This is another definition of the fetish\, in terms of the fetishistic object (the art object) that creates an obstacle to getting close to the fetishistic subject (the artist). Is this what artists & art is all about\, formal obstacles & dialectic detours to getting closer\, but not too close\, to objects of desire\, what Jacques Lacan calls the enigmatic signifier. Is it all just a slight of hand\, a tease\, social anxiety or anti-social behaviour?\nAs Slavoj Žižek writes: “fetishists are not dreamers lost in their private worlds\, they are thoroughly realists\, able to accept the way things effectively are — since they have their fetish to which they can cling in order to cancel the full impact of reality.\nAs I said to you in our first Zoom meeting together\, I thought the process of screen-printing\, the robotic drag of ink across a screen\, protected me from my own subjectivity. In that there was a distance between me & your artworks through the very process of screen-printing\, which doesn’t allow for the indecision & decisiveness that directs a drawing\, painting or photograph. But the longer this process went on\, the more mistakes & restarts I made\, the more I got to know in the atomic detail & saturation of your art as image\, as ink\, the more I began to love them\, the deepest subjectivity\, where all distance is lost to an over-proximity & ownership of object of desire.\nBut maybe the exhibition\, & the process of installing the work together at Garter Lane (garter belt being another fetishistic object if there ever was one) will help transfer all that weight of false ownership back to you\, where it belongs. It’s difficult enough to carry the weight of your own art\, but to carry the weight of others is not just fetishistic\, it’s perverted.\nBut being a pervert is probably what artists do best…\nSee you at Garter Lane!” – James Merrigan\nGarter Lane Arts Centre\, O’Connell Street\, Waterford \nBox Office: +353 51 855038\nAdmin: +353 51 877153\nTicket Sales: ticket@garterlane.ie\nGeneral Enquiries: admin@garterlane.ie \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:CIARA O’CONNOR: BRAZEN
DESCRIPTION:FOH Garter Lane Arts Centre\, 6th August – 26th October 2022\nCiara O’Connor is a Kerry based visual artist who works with textiles and embroidery.\nHer work is figurative and deals with themes of identity\, nostalgia\, relationships\, and feminism.\nShe uses a combination of hand stitching\, free motion embroidery and raw-edged appliqué to create her thread drawings. The slow\, meditative nature of hand stitching allows time to become intimately connected with what she is making. The speed and fluidity of machine stitching allows for a more intuitive\, expressive outcome and instant gratification. They are equally important to her.\nShe uses vintage fabrics or material that she has a personal connection to. She works from both sides of the fabric. This enables her to manipulate the thread to control mark making.\nWhen she stitches\, she is aware of how her actions mirror those of her mother\, her grandmother and others that have gone before her. She relishes that connection. She works in a medium associated with femininity and domestic labour\, but to her it represents her desire to break free from those same preconceptions and constraints.\nBrazen\nAs a young girl\, the word brazen had negative connotations for O’Connor. It conjured up images of the brazen hussy\, the jezebel\, a woman without shame. Bold and brash with loose morals. She did and said as she pleased. A woman who loved herself.\nUpon mature reflection\, O’Connor knows examines this to be a doctrine of control.\n‘Brazen’ is a collection of stories about the theft of consent and the subsequent practice of emotional repair. It is about resilience\, defying patriarchal ideology\, self-forgiveness and learning to silence shame.\nThe fabrics used in the making of this work are part of O’Connor’s personal heritage. Every fabric and stitch choice are carefully considered. Some stitches fortify\, some protect and some house secrets.\nThis is a woman’s work.\nFAIRE magazine online journal:\nhttps://www.fairepress.com/journal/ciara-oconnor\nInstagram: thewitchthread\nGarter Lane Arts Centre\, O’Connell Street\, Waterford \nBox Office: +353 51 855038\nAdmin: +353 51 877153\nTicket Sales: ticket@garterlane.ie\nGeneral Enquiries: admin@garterlane.ie \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…
