SUMMARY:ALL FLESH
DESCRIPTION:Venue: GOMA Gallery Waterford\nDates:14 October – 25 November 2023\nAll Flesh is a new exhibition by artist Gillian O’Shea. The official launch will take place at GOMA Waterford on Saturday 14th October from 4–6pm. All are welcome!\nAll Flesh is a new site specific multi-sensory textile installation and video work by Irish artist Gillian O’Shea. Through multi-layered installations sculpture\, colour\, film and sound merge\, transporting us to an uneasy confluence of opposing realities. These created environments invite visitors to experience\, consider and reflect on our ambivalent attitudes to the natural environment.\nThis work is inspired by the artist’s investigations of the often forgotten and unseen intrinsic importance of fungi and lichens in stabilising networks of living relationships. These humble organisms are intrinsically connected to vast networks of life on earth\, including our own. Yet\, to most of us they are inconsequential.\nCoarse\, fleshy organisms intertwine and penetrate the troposphere\, swaddling each vascular network\, protecting the almighty mycelial network. This is the living subterranean seam by which our world is connected\, regardless of and despite our interventions.\n‘Pulse’ is a 4-minute-long video piece\, central to the exhibition. This multi-projection of film immerses the visitor in a dystopian representation of the future. Drawing on the ombre chinois’s tradition of shadow play paper mechanical links create a pulley system\, using the greenhouse as a motif of human intervention. They are inevitably devoured by the very operating system that created them.\nAll Flesh will be exhibited in the Gallery of Modern Art Waterford (GOMA) from 14th October to 25th November 2023. This work will also form the gallery’s submission for the Imagine Festival Waterford which will take place in October 2023.\nFor more details see: www.gomawaterford.ie / 051 582633\nGOMA Gallery of Modern Art\, 6 Lombard Street\, Waterford. SUMMARY:SPIDER TREE BY BEN REILLY
DESCRIPTION:Spider Tree\nSpider Tree refers to a particular gnarly old yew tree that to me\, particularly in winter\, looks like a long legged circular Black spider. In the summer\, it fills out into a sort of glowing circle that has the look of a very hairy dogs head. This Tree became my start point for drawings during that period of restricted walking. At first\, I used these Drawings and photos in photo etching but for the last year and a half\, I have been working on them through Sculpture and they have now developed into this small forest.\nCast wax\, and Bronze\, carved\, wood\, welded mild steel\, Pasted Gold leaf. Glued screwed and bolted bits and pieces form the basis of most of the Sculpture pieces. The prints are Photo Etching and Spit Bite\, on Hahnemuhle Natural White.\nSat 23rd Sep – Sat 18th Nov 2023. 11am-5.30pm\nGarter Lane Arts Centre\, 22a O’Connell Street Waterford.\ntel :0035351855038 E.Mail: ticket@garterlane.ie \nSpider Tree by Ben Reilly \n \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:WITHOUT BORDERS ANGELA GILMORE
DESCRIPTION:GOMA 2ND SEPTEMBER – 8TH OCTOBER 2023\nWithout Borders encompasses many aspects of the research carried out by artist Angela Gilmour during a residency sailing the Arctic waters around Svalbard’s archipelago in 2019.\nCoastlines are at the root of many conflicts\, international crises\, and wars. The strategic role of coastlines\, their value as economic commodities\, and disagreements over fishing rights\, often cause rifts between neighbouring countries.\nOccupation of seemingly insignificant land masses (tiny islands\, flood plains\, marshland) can potentially lead to war. Refugees risk their lives to reach coastlines across the world. Some coastlines are more politically complex than others\, strategically important or more scientifically significant. Svalbard is one such land mass\, which lies at the nexus of politics\, science\, and Earth’s climatic changes\, even though it’s located in one of the most inaccessible areas on the planet\, high in the Arctic\, a mere 10 degrees latitude from the North Pole.\nIn theory\, Svalbard has no borders. No visa is required to live there\, though there are laws prohibiting giving birth or dying on the archipelago. Also known as the world’s thermostat\, Svalbard is home to the most northerly science research centre on Earth. Scientists recently recorded the highest Arctic temperatures on record at a Svalbard outpost. Svalbard is also rich in oil and minerals\, and it is one of only a few places in the world where whale hunting is still legal.\nSvalbard’s delicate environment is vulnerable to commercial development and an explosive increase in tourism has led to a growing environmental crisis. Having no indigenous people\, the inhabitants come from all corners of the earth\, many of whom made their home there to escape persecution and poverty in their homelands.\nWithout Borders encompasses many aspects of research carried out by the artist during a residency sailing the coast of Svalbard’s archipelago in 2019. The exhibition brings together etchings\, paintings\, photography and installation to highlight the complex interweaving of political and environmental issues in the Arctic\, and serving as a basis for discussion on broader worldwide issues encompassing climate change\, land possession and border politics.\nAbout the Artist\nOriginally from Scotland and formerly a physicist\,  Angela Gilmour now lives and works as a visual artist in Cork. Gilmour’s interests and artistic practice surround the urgency of climate change\, land consumption\, sustainability and the political and environmental impact of land and sea borders. SUMMARY:FROM A LOW AND QUIET SEA
DESCRIPTION:Garter Lane on May 10th & 11th\nDecadent Theatre Company and Galway Arts Centre bring From a Low and Quiet Sea to Garter Lane on May 10th & 11th . Adapted for the stage from Donal Ryan’s Booker Prize nominated novel\, the drama comes to Waterford as part of a major 18-venue tour crisscrossing Ireland in May and June.\nThe world premiere production in the 2022 Galway International Arts Festival garnered critical praise with The Irish Independent saying\, “Not a moment\, a nuance\, a gesture is less than perfect throughout\, as each of the characters in turn drag the heart from your body… This play will haunt you.”\nFrom a Low and Quiet Sea is a carefully crafted portrait of the intersecting lives of four characters\, each searching for a version of home. From war–torn Syria to small–town Ireland\, they are scarred by all they have loved and lost and are drawn towards a powerful reckoning that will bring them together in the most unexpected of ways.\nFor Farouk\, family is all. He has protected his wife and daughter from the war. If they stay\, they will lose their freedom. If they flee\, they will lose all they have known of home\, for a faraway land across the merciless sea.\nLampy is distracted. He’s with Eleanor\, but she’s not Chloe. His granddad’s sniping jokes are getting on his wick. And on top of all that\, he has a bus to drive; those old folks from the home can’t wait all day.\nFor John\, the game was always the lifeblood coursing through his veins. Manipulating people for enrichment\, for enjoyment\, for spite. But it was never enough. As the lifeblood is slowing down\, will God listen?\nFlorence’s son is acting differently which forces her to look for answers\, but she is afraid of the truth that lies within herself.\nThe adaptation of Ryan’s acclaimed novel is a collaboration between the author\, the original cast\, and Decadent Theatre Company’s Artistic Director\, Andrew Flynn\, who also directs.  Aosaf Afzal [Farouk] and Darragh O’Toole [Lampy] will reprise their roles from last year’s production. Denis Conway\, recently seen in Hangmen\, has joined the cast as John and Eva Bartley will play Florence.\nBoth natives of Nenagh\, Co. Tipperary\, Andrew Flynn and Donal Ryan have form as creative collaborators. Flynn\, along with Jarlath Tivnan\, adapted Ryan’s novel\, The Thing About December\, for the stage in 2019.\nRyan is the author of six best-selling novels\, most recently The Queen of Dirt Island [2022]\, and a short story collection. His debut novel\, The Spinning Heart [2013]\, was also nominated for the Booker Prize and was voted Irish Book of the Decade in 2016 in a nationwide poll run by Dublin Book Festival. His many awards include the European Union Prize for Literature\, the Guardian First Book Award\, and three Irish Book Awards.\nHis books have been translated into more than twenty languages. He lectures in Creative Writing at the University of Limerick.\nAndrew Flynn has been Artistic Director of Decadent Theatre Company since 2000. One of Ireland’s busiest directors\, he is currently preparing for the Irish premiere of Martin McDonagh’s Hangmen\, which is a co-production between Decadent and Gaiety Productions running in Dublin and Galway from 11 March to 15 April.  Andrew’s most recent directorial work for Decadent includes the Autumn 2022 tour of Jimmy Murphy’s The Chief and the Spring 2022 tour of David Harrower’s Blackbird.\nFlynn’s other work includes Eden; A Love Like That; The Thing About December; Pumpgirl; Port Authority; The Mai; A Skull in Connemara; Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me; Wit; and for Gaiety Productions\, Martin McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan\, The Lieutenant of Inishmore and The Lonesome West.\nAndrew Flynn and Donal Ryan were recipients of a 2021 Elevate bursary grant to adapt and workshop the script of From a Low and Quiet Sea.\nDecadent Theatre Company gratefully acknowledges the support of the Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and Galway County Council.\nGarter Lane Arts Centre 22 O’Connell Street Waterford. SUMMARY:Drag & Draw
DESCRIPTION:Children’s Room\, Garter Lane Arts Studio\, 25th March 2023\, 6-7:30pm \nDrag & Draw is back in Waterford for another drawing session. For any newbies to the event\, this is an art class with a difference. It is essentially a life drawing class\, but your model is a drag performer – so it’s half art class and half drag show. Expect slow and fast paced drawing exercises\, lip syncs\, tunes and some (light) audience interaction! \nBasic drawing materials will be provided but feel free to bring your own stuff also (dry materials only). \nAs always\, this is an informal event and will be very suitable for drawing beginners. It will also give experienced artists the opportunity to draw not your typical life drawing model. \nhttps://garterlane.ie/events/drag-and-draw/ \n€12 \n+353 51 855038 \nticket@garterlane.ie \nChildren’s Room\, Garter Lane Arts Studio\, O’Connell Street\, Waterford \nSharing & Printing\n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading…
