SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: At Night the Hens Stand and Dream
DESCRIPTION:At Night the Hens Stand and Dream\nNiamh Coffey\n20 August – 9 September 2026\nGOMA Gallery of Modern Art is delighted to present At Night the Hens Stand and Dream\, an art exhibition by Niamh Coffey. \n………….Enter under intertwined necks of birds in love. Please don’t let the PDA make you queasy. A hungry and disembodied mouth looms over you\, sputtering frantic toads and teeth out onto the floor. You step back to avoid them and bump into a small and ugly spiked creature. It scuttles past\, leaving a trail of juicy\, bespittled blackberries behind. Please do not be tempted to snack right now. A ladder tumbles down from the moon\, droplets of milk following. Two conjoined eggs whisper as you pass by. You didn’t catch the words but the tone seemed ominous\, especially in this duplicitous Gemini season. You go to leave and a sweaty hand presses something conspiratorially into your palm………………… \nThis exhibition combines two bodies of work\, Siúnta (2023-25) and Clodhoppers (2025-ongoing). Taking its name from the Irish for a seam or joint\, Siúnta weaves together past narratives to imagine new ecological relationships. Clodhoppers takes its name from how the celestial characters\, Sphinx\, Moon and Godwoman\, refer to the earthbound subjects in Marina Carr’s play The Boy. Clodhoppers widens these imagined relationships to include cosmic connections. In this exhibition\, forms of flesh\, fur\, flower and feather mingle and merge. Subjects create symbiotic and antagonistic relationships\, exhibit absurd actions and explore neoteric habits together. \nIn 1937-39\, the Irish Folklore Commission asked primary school children to collect local history from their relatives and neighbours. Nestled in exercise copies\, between thousands of stories detailed in meticulous handwriting\, lie their tales of metamorphosis and binary-blurring. Hares become milk-hungry witches\, needy children are turned to stone\, gooseberries transform sore eyes\, tadpoles swirl in boggy bellies. Siúnta uses these instances of metamorphosis as departure points to wriggle further into absurd and imaginary realms. These archives show that in an earlier Irish imaginary world\, the boundaries that separate us from nature and other entities were not so separate and fixed\, but porous and blurred. \nThe exhibition was made by gathering these stories of binary-blurring between humans and non-humans and making drawings based on them. These drawings then played together\, created links and found connections\, they were collaged together\, their elements were extended and emphasised\, their actions sped up and slowed down\, their beginnings swapped with their ends\, subjects up and left one story for another. Narratives eventually emerged from this process and were brought into a textile world\, a medium used because of its rich history with collaborative story-telling\, connotations to gender and queerness and ability to physically join separate elements together. \nIn Clodhoppers\, wider historical\, alchemical and folkloric beliefs of human connection to the universe inspire and mix with these narratives. In the textile collage To Fix in a Waxy State\, disembodied leatherette hands diligently knit\, sew and prepare skin suits from kneeling wool donors as animal eyes wait from a star-lit sea. Soft swollen constellations of blackberries spit\, gurgle and glisten. Worms wriggle in wonder among glittering moon rays. In The Twirlers\, a hand-drawn wallpaper\, subjects twist into wheels and perpetually spin from the sky\, down and down a dug path\, trowels and watering cans in hand and foot as they whirl through peeping cow-trodden piles of upturned earth. \nThese imagined narratives offer a humorous invitation to envisage new ways of interacting with and existing within the larger matrix of nature and the earth. This work is guided by the concept of queer ecology\, which asks us to abandon ideas of human exceptionalism and anthropomorphism and instead asks us to see humans as part of a complex and interwoven system\, whose patterns and processes are different from our own. \nThis work was kindly supported by a Laois Co. Council Arts Act Grant\, Bród na Gaeltachta’s Ceangal residency and GOMA’s Ten Year Anniversary residency. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nNiamh Coffey is a Dublin-based visual artist from Stradbally\, Co. Laois\, whose practice encompasses textiles\, drawings and sculpture. Their work uses ideas from ecology\, queer theory and Irish folklore to create imagined ecological relationships. Niamh graduated from NCAD in 2016 with a degree in Sculpture and Expanded Practices. Their debut solo exhibition Siúnta was shown in 2025 in Cultúrlann\, Belfast\, in Pallas Projects as part of their Artist-Initiated Projects and in Súil Gallery\, Co. Clare. Previous group exhibitions in which their work has featured include: Borders at Rua Red; Work/Force/Field/ at A4 Sounds and; Atelier Páipéar at Workhouse Union. Upcoming shows in 2026 include solo exhibitions at The Arthouse in Stradbally and Custom House Gallery in Westport. In 2022\, Niamh received an Arts Council Agility Award. Between 2024-2026\, Niamh was awarded Laois County Council’s Tyrone Guthrie Centre Residency Bursary and two Arts Act Grants. SUMMARY:Exhibition – The Story of Us Independent Ireland and the 1926 Census
DESCRIPTION:The 1926 census has been an amazing new resource that allows people to discover their family stories and the stories of their communities since its release online by the National Archives of Ireland on the 18th of April. Now\, Waterford City and County Archives and Waterford Libraries Service in partnership with the National Archives of Ireland will be launching an exhibition on the 1926 Census at Waterford Central Library\, Lady Lane on Wednesday 5th August at 6.30pm. This exhibition from the National Archives of Ireland will allow visitors to the exhibition to explore the Ireland of 1926 and discover the stories told by the census about the newly independent Ireland and its people. \nIn addition to viewing the exhibition itself visitors will be able to search the census online at laptops made available to accompany the exhibition. Visitors to the exhibition will also find a selection of documents from Waterford City and County Archives providing a glimpse into life in Waterford City and County in the 1920s. Waterford Libraries Service will also have a display of books on Ireland and Waterford in the 1920s. \nMayor of Waterford Cllr. Liam Brazil will open the exhibition on Wednesday 5th August and Zoe Reid\, Keeper of Manuscripts at the National Archives will speak about the work that was carried out by the National Archives to make the census available. Fin Dwyer from the Irish History Podcast will talk at the launch about items of Waterford interest in the 1926 census. \nAll are welcome to attend the launch of the exhibition but please RSVP on Eventbrite at https://bit.ly/4frzmfe or contact Waterford Central Library on 051 849975. \nThe exhibition will be open to visitors at the Index Gallery\, Waterford Central Library from 4th-20th August. Delving into theatrical settings\, she captures moments of quiet and stillness. Through recurring symbols such as curtains\, deserted stages\, and performative environments\, she investigates the thin line between illusion and reality\, presence and absence. \nIn Western art history\, ‘mise en abyme’ is the technique of placing a copy of an image within itself. Murphy uses this concept as a metaphor to investigate the boundaries between real and fictive spaces\, concentrating on recurring motifs of theatre curtains\, outdoor carousels\, circus tents\, performative sites\, city parks and empty stages. This work addresses the essential nature of photographic seeing\, performance\, and Freud’s notion of the uncanny where the familiar becomes suddenly strange and disconcerting through a play between presence and absence\, evoking both enchantment and a pang of unease. \n“Within these spaces\, the boundaries between the authentic and the artificial become blurred. Drawing on a background in theatre and informed by psychoanalysis and magic realism\, her work provokes viewers to question what they are seeing\, bringing their own histories and narratives to ‘complete’ the meaning of the image. Balancing the theoretical and the experiential (including that of the viewer)\, Murphy is especially drawn to the inherent binary nature of photography – the tensions of the medium between its real/indexical nature and its unreal/constructed nature. The photograph is simultaneously both record/truth and constructed/staged subject to multiple interpretations\, perceptions and distortions by both maker and viewer. \nMurphy investigates the boundaries between real and fictive spaces within the pictorial frame: concentrating on recurring motifs of theatre curtains; outdoor carousels; circus tents; performative sites; city parks; and empty stages. These scenes become the point of departure for a wider exploration of the tension between hidden and revealed\, negative and positive\, illusion and disillusion\, the uncanny and the unremarkable. \nRecent exhibitions: Centre Culturel Irlandais\, Paris\, GOMA\, Waterford\, Limerick City Gallery\, Draíocht\, National Gallery of Ireland\, RHA\, Golden Thread Gallery Belfast\, Halftone\, PhotoIreland\, Loop Festival\, Barcelona. \nMurphy is a co-founding member of Shell/Ter Artist Collective (S/TAC). Her work is held is in private + public collections. SUMMARY:Streets Through Time\, Free heritage inspired tours of Waterford each Saturday in July
DESCRIPTION:  \nExplore heritage and creativity as the streets of Waterford Cultural Quarter come alive with actor and writer Joe Meagher. Free tours are available each Saturday morning at 11 am throughout July 2026. Bookings can be made through Eventbrite by searching for Streets Through Time or emailing culturalquarter@waterfordcouncil.ie \n  \nJoe will explore how Waterford developed as a centre of trade and industry throughout the Georgian era and how this was established. It was in the O’Connell Street area of the city that that our most iconic businesses were founded; Denny’s\, Jacob’s\, and Penrose Crystal to name but a few\, and it was on these streets and lanes that the people of Waterford found their voice and played their part in the great struggles of their day. \n  \nToday Waterford Cultural Quarter is the heart of the city’s arts scene. DESCRIPTION:Join us at GOMA Waterford on Thursday 28 May from 11.00am–12.30pm for a special audio descriptive tour of ‘where oxlips and the nodding violet grows’\, a solo exhibition of work by Joseph Heffernan at GOMA Waterford\, led by the exhibition’s curator Aideen Quirke. This tour takes place as part of the 2026 Bealtaine Festival\, Ireland’s national festival celebrating the arts and ageing. \n  \nAudio descriptive tours are designed to make art accessible to everyone. Working across painting\, drawing\, text and assemblage/installation his practice is concerned with identity\, rituals\, performance and how memory is constructed. \n  \nHeffernan’s sculptural work uses found\, antique and reclaimed materials to examine how objects can carry meaning. They are often devotional in nature and question how we chose to assign significance to things in order to construct and poeticise personal narratives. These assemblages and installations provide a theatrical setting for his paintings\, drawings and texts. \n  \nHis current body of work and upcoming exhibition ‘where oxlips and the nodding violet grows’ imagines a speculative narrative dominated by a game referred to as ‘The Ceremony of the Flowers’. While the rules of this game are only alluded to they seem to be an abstract synthesis of poetry\, mathematics and esoteric knowledge that envisage the world as an abstruse place full of elaborate rituals involving obscure signs and symbols. It functions as an intercessor of sorts between the mundanity of the world and the quasi divine. SUMMARY:EXHIBITION: Robert Jackson\, ‘As Below so Above’ at WGOA
DESCRIPTION:Waterford Gallery of Art is delighted to present ‘as below\, so above’\, a solo exhibition of new and recent paintings by Robert Jackson. Launching 6pm on 26th February\, this free exhibition runs until 20 June 2026. \nRobert Jackson is a painter and printmaker based in Fife\, Scotland. Jackson spent his early years in Waterford and attended Newtown School and the Central Technical Institute before studying Fine Art Printmaking at the National College of Art and Design\, Dublin\, and receiving his MFA from Duncan Jordanstone College of Art and Design\, Dundee. \nHis artwork is held in private and public collections worldwide including the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland\, and Waterford Healing Arts Trust\, and the Waterford Gallery of Art. DESCRIPTION:GOMA Gallery of Modern Art Waterford\n22nd October – 24th November 2024\nGOMA in collaboration with the Imagine Arts Festival are delighted to invite you to….\nThe Ties that Bind\nShell/ter Artist Collective (S/TAC)\nDiana Copperwhite\, Allyson Keehan\, Niamh McGuinne\, Sharon Murphy\, Geraldine O’Neill\n‘The Ties that Bind’ is S/TAC’s fourth show to date and focuses on emotional\, somatic and psychological aspects of shelter\, presenting the collaborative installation The Clothesline\, a short film The Ties that Bind and a selection of works from each of the artists.\nThe Clothesline comprises approx 45 painted and printed textile pieces\, each depicting a particular source of imagery\, approach and palette associated with the members of the collective as individuals. While each carries the distinctive marks and gestures of each of the five artists of S/TAC\, the whole work is unified through over printing using colour and stencilled motifs which reference a connecting theme of exposure and masking of internal body organs. The collaborative installation acts as a symbol of shelter\, connectedness and intersection which overtly plays with notions of ‘life on view’\, private versus public\, acts of display and exposure\, domesticity and ‘women’s work’…\nDeveloping this concept\, in The Ties that Bind\, the clothesline can signify a variety of feminist and feminised ideas and is a deep reaching metaphor for the ties that bind families\, communities and women together. Strung together it becomes a symbol of the chaos and intersection of lives and cultures within an imposed vertical grid. The lines can be seen to embody twin notions of shelter/ exposure; concealment/revelation; reality/fiction; conscious/unconscious.\nAccompanying these collaborative works are a selection of pieces by each of the artists which provide some hints and suggestion to the particular significance/resonance to each and how that feeds into and is nourished by the participation and collaboration of a collective.\nCurated by Jenna Whelan.\nAbout the CollectiveThe Shell/ter Artist Collective (S/TAC) evolved organically during the pandemic 2020 and was driven by a desire of the artists to talk about the effects\, both personal and professional\, of a shifting and unpredictable world. In this dynamic space the artists found ways to explore\, enrich and diversify their independent practice while supporting one another. The Collective explores the concept of shelter from emotional\, psychological\, and philosophical perspectives and previous exhibitions include ‘Shelter’ at the National Gallery of Ireland 2023 and ‘The ladder is always there’ in Draiocht in 2023/2024. Shared identity\, common purpose and egalitarian values underpin much of the desire to work as a group\, and the nature of this engagement continues to shift and develop.\nDiana Copperwhite (RHA) is a member of Aosdána and draws particular inspiration from early Irish modernism. Her paintings explore the relationship between colours\, gestures\, figuration\, and representation. She gives structure to the unseen world of atoms and molecules to examine the psychological and spatial interpretation of self. Layering fragmented sources that range from personal memory to science\, media and internet\, Copperwhite’s canvases become worlds in which the real is unreal and this unreality is in a constant state of reforming.\nhttp://www.dianacopperwhite.net\nAllyson Keehan is an Irish visual artist based between Ireland and Scotland. She was awarded PhD in Fine Art from Glasgow School of Art in 2021 titled ‘Painting and Materiality: Three Creative Strategies for Transformation’. Her research is in the expanded field of painting and the use of drapery in art. Looking closely at veiling and artifice\, her practice incorporates drapery and framing to create complex structural experiences of real and imaginary spaces. Drapery has a wealth of history relating to painting and these propositions amplify the experience of viewing and understanding.\nhttp://www.allysonkeehan.ie\n \nNiamh McGuinne‘s practice combines print\, sculpture\, textile\, film and installation. The immersive nature of her background in paper conservation working with historical collections informs this art practice. Conceptually she is interested in the body as the protector\, a shell in which to develop…and how time and growth are marked and interpreted. Her work has an element of the performative\, either as a space or as costume in which to interact\, which present an invitation to participate – physically or imaginatively.\nhttp://www.niamhmcguinne.com\nSharon Murphy is visual artist based between Dublin and Paris whose practice is lens-based incorporating photography\, video\, installation and drawing. Her work investigates the boundaries between the seen / unseen\, fictive / real\, conscious / (sub)liminal. Drawing on a background in theatre and informed by concepts in magic realism and psychoanalysis\, recurring motifs in her work include: theatre curtains; carousels; circus tents\, performative sites; embodied staged spaces. Her works address uncertainty\, the uncanny\, the ‘there / not there’\, linked to an investigation\, quintessential to both photography and performance of what it is the viewer is shown or is seeing.\nhttp://www.sharonmurphy.ie\nGeraldine O’Neill (RHA) is a member of Aosdána and has a particular respect for and understanding of the techniques and visual language used in the history of art. She has long responded to the increasing confrontation with human engagement and relationship with the ecosystem\, in particular the Anthropocene whose traces are now embedded within the geological layers of the Earth’s structure. Playing with incongruities of time and space\, she juxtaposes traditional references with scientific reasoning and contemporary perspective in large-scale and small scale compositions. Thursday June 13th at 7.00 pm.\nColm Tóibín\, internationally acclaimed Irish author and current Laureate for Irish Fiction has released a new book ‘Long Island’ and will be in conversation with Mary Conway\, City and County Librarian\, at Dungarvan Library on June 13th at 7pm.\nWhile this is a free event\, booking is required. Call 058 21141.\n‘Long Island’ is the much-anticipated sequel to Tóibín’s 2009 novel ‘Brooklyn’ which was also adapted into a film in 2015. In ‘Long Island’ we see Eilis and Tony living a happy\, secure life in Long Island 20 years on from the ending of ‘Brooklyn’. When a stranger with an Irish accent knocks on Eilis’s door however\, she turns towards Ireland once again and the life she left behind. In his follow on to the best-selling and prizewinning novel ‘Brooklyn’ we see Tóibín at his best\, a master of deeply moving scenes full of quiet restraint.\nThe author of eleven novels\, including ‘The Magician’\, ‘The Master’\, ‘Nora Webster’ and ‘Brooklyn’ Colm Tóibín has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize three times\, was winner of the International Dublin Literary award for ‘The Master’ and has won both the Costa Novel award and the Impac Award. He has published two collections of stories and many works of non-fiction. Tóibín is the Irene and Sidney B. DESCRIPTION:Official Launch at GOMA: Saturday 8th June\, 4pm\nFolly | Façade – Ciara Rodgers\n8th June – 13th July 2024\nGOMA presents Folly | Façade\, an exhibition by visual artist Ciara Rodgers.\nOfficial Opening on Saturday the 8th of June at 4pm.\nCities\, understood and experienced as spaces that are made and remade according to principles directed by capitalism\, leave behind debris and distortions\, literally and metaphorically\, which no longer fit the modus operandi.\nDriven by a feeling of potential and liberation whilst walking alone in the city\, Rodgers’ viewpoint of a female urban wanderer\, or flaneûse contemplates the urban spectacle in all its contradictions\, fluctuations and fragilities. Her reflective material responses are shaped by personal experiences and the self determination of Arte Povera and D.I.Y. Punk music movements.\nThis exhibition prompts the viewer to consider texture\, colour\, structure\, openings and accidents in the city. Precarious\, ephemeral pseudo-architectural structures and drawings exist in a state of flux; bundled\, propped\, and balanced\, whilst Polaroids act as witness to moments of discovery. Enrolment Window Open Now through 30th May 2024\nLearn brushstrokes and techniques for painting grasses\, flowers\, trees\, mountains and landscapes in this online blended learning program for beginners. Japanese Black Ink Painting (Sumi-e) is a unique art form using only black ink\, handmade paper and a special brush. It is a calming and relaxing activity.\nThere are three options available for membership in the course program. The Basic Monthly Membership option includes live group learning online sessions including guidance and feedback to improve personal progress\, access to pre-recorded instructional videos that Members can watch in their own time\, and Pop-up Cafés (where Members can meet up for tea and a chat). Our volunteers are present to assist you with artostic inspiration.  Birds of Gaza is more than an online gallery. DESCRIPTION:Goma Gallery of Modern Art Waterford. Saturday 17th February at 1.00 p.m.\n“The embodied act of painting\, touching in just enough to capture the figure in movement\, allowing them to emerge on the canvas until they are barely visible\, keeps these images gestural\, active and authentic. Through painting and drawing I explore visual expressions of the beauty of enacted truth in gesture\, movement and temporality.\nPainting and drawing is an embodied practice for me and is informed by over twenty years of meditation and reflection in the Vietnamese Zen Tradition.”\nCaroline Bowles has a B.A. (Honors) in Fine Art from The Crawford College of Art and Design\, a Licentiate in Chinese medicine from Nanjing University\, China and is a trained musician. She has received purchase awards from PMI\, MTU\, Sample Studios Graduate Associate Member Award 2023\, Backwater Artists Network Award 2023 and Waterford City and County Council Bursary in 2023. She is also a member of Visual Artists Ireland and the Mór Artists Collective.\nHaru (whose name means ‘playful)’ is trained in Butoh contemporary dance\, a form of organic improvised movement. She has performed and studied contemporary dance under Naoko Ito in Tokyo and has trained in improvisation under Adam Benjamin.
