DESCRIPTION:Join us at GOMA Waterford on Thursday 28 May from 11.00am–12.30pm for a special audio descriptive tour of ‘where oxlips and the nodding violet grows’\, a solo exhibition of work by Joseph Heffernan at GOMA Waterford\, led by the exhibition’s curator Aideen Quirke. This tour takes place as part of the 2026 Bealtaine Festival\, Ireland’s national festival celebrating the arts and ageing. \n  \nAudio descriptive tours are designed to make art accessible to everyone. Working across painting\, drawing\, text and assemblage/installation his practice is concerned with identity\, rituals\, performance and how memory is constructed. \n  \nHeffernan’s sculptural work uses found\, antique and reclaimed materials to examine how objects can carry meaning. They are often devotional in nature and question how we chose to assign significance to things in order to construct and poeticise personal narratives. These assemblages and installations provide a theatrical setting for his paintings\, drawings and texts. \n  \nHis current body of work and upcoming exhibition ‘where oxlips and the nodding violet grows’ imagines a speculative narrative dominated by a game referred to as ‘The Ceremony of the Flowers’. While the rules of this game are only alluded to they seem to be an abstract synthesis of poetry\, mathematics and esoteric knowledge that envisage the world as an abstruse place full of elaborate rituals involving obscure signs and symbols. It functions as an intercessor of sorts between the mundanity of the world and the quasi divine. DESCRIPTION:GOMA Gallery of Modern Art Waterford\n22nd October – 24th November 2024\nGOMA in collaboration with the Imagine Arts Festival are delighted to invite you to….\nThe Ties that Bind\nShell/ter Artist Collective (S/TAC)\nDiana Copperwhite\, Allyson Keehan\, Niamh McGuinne\, Sharon Murphy\, Geraldine O’Neill\n‘The Ties that Bind’ is S/TAC’s fourth show to date and focuses on emotional\, somatic and psychological aspects of shelter\, presenting the collaborative installation The Clothesline\, a short film The Ties that Bind and a selection of works from each of the artists.\nThe Clothesline comprises approx 45 painted and printed textile pieces\, each depicting a particular source of imagery\, approach and palette associated with the members of the collective as individuals. While each carries the distinctive marks and gestures of each of the five artists of S/TAC\, the whole work is unified through over printing using colour and stencilled motifs which reference a connecting theme of exposure and masking of internal body organs. The collaborative installation acts as a symbol of shelter\, connectedness and intersection which overtly plays with notions of ‘life on view’\, private versus public\, acts of display and exposure\, domesticity and ‘women’s work’…\nDeveloping this concept\, in The Ties that Bind\, the clothesline can signify a variety of feminist and feminised ideas and is a deep reaching metaphor for the ties that bind families\, communities and women together. Strung together it becomes a symbol of the chaos and intersection of lives and cultures within an imposed vertical grid. The lines can be seen to embody twin notions of shelter/ exposure; concealment/revelation; reality/fiction; conscious/unconscious.\nAccompanying these collaborative works are a selection of pieces by each of the artists which provide some hints and suggestion to the particular significance/resonance to each and how that feeds into and is nourished by the participation and collaboration of a collective.\nCurated by Jenna Whelan.\nAbout the CollectiveThe Shell/ter Artist Collective (S/TAC) evolved organically during the pandemic 2020 and was driven by a desire of the artists to talk about the effects\, both personal and professional\, of a shifting and unpredictable world. In this dynamic space the artists found ways to explore\, enrich and diversify their independent practice while supporting one another. The Collective explores the concept of shelter from emotional\, psychological\, and philosophical perspectives and previous exhibitions include ‘Shelter’ at the National Gallery of Ireland 2023 and ‘The ladder is always there’ in Draiocht in 2023/2024. Shared identity\, common purpose and egalitarian values underpin much of the desire to work as a group\, and the nature of this engagement continues to shift and develop.\nDiana Copperwhite (RHA) is a member of Aosdána and draws particular inspiration from early Irish modernism. Her paintings explore the relationship between colours\, gestures\, figuration\, and representation. She gives structure to the unseen world of atoms and molecules to examine the psychological and spatial interpretation of self. Layering fragmented sources that range from personal memory to science\, media and internet\, Copperwhite’s canvases become worlds in which the real is unreal and this unreality is in a constant state of reforming.\nhttp://www.dianacopperwhite.net\nAllyson Keehan is an Irish visual artist based between Ireland and Scotland. She was awarded PhD in Fine Art from Glasgow School of Art in 2021 titled ‘Painting and Materiality: Three Creative Strategies for Transformation’. Her research is in the expanded field of painting and the use of drapery in art. Looking closely at veiling and artifice\, her practice incorporates drapery and framing to create complex structural experiences of real and imaginary spaces. Drapery has a wealth of history relating to painting and these propositions amplify the experience of viewing and understanding.\nhttp://www.allysonkeehan.ie\n \nNiamh McGuinne‘s practice combines print\, sculpture\, textile\, film and installation. The immersive nature of her background in paper conservation working with historical collections informs this art practice. Conceptually she is interested in the body as the protector\, a shell in which to develop…and how time and growth are marked and interpreted. Her work has an element of the performative\, either as a space or as costume in which to interact\, which present an invitation to participate – physically or imaginatively.\nhttp://www.niamhmcguinne.com\nSharon Murphy is visual artist based between Dublin and Paris whose practice is lens-based incorporating photography\, video\, installation and drawing. Her work investigates the boundaries between the seen / unseen\, fictive / real\, conscious / (sub)liminal. Drawing on a background in theatre and informed by concepts in magic realism and psychoanalysis\, recurring motifs in her work include: theatre curtains; carousels; circus tents\, performative sites; embodied staged spaces. Her works address uncertainty\, the uncanny\, the ‘there / not there’\, linked to an investigation\, quintessential to both photography and performance of what it is the viewer is shown or is seeing.\nhttp://www.sharonmurphy.ie\nGeraldine O’Neill (RHA) is a member of Aosdána and has a particular respect for and understanding of the techniques and visual language used in the history of art. She has long responded to the increasing confrontation with human engagement and relationship with the ecosystem\, in particular the Anthropocene whose traces are now embedded within the geological layers of the Earth’s structure. Playing with incongruities of time and space\, she juxtaposes traditional references with scientific reasoning and contemporary perspective in large-scale and small scale compositions. Her reflective material responses are shaped by personal experiences and the self determination of Arte Povera and D.I.Y. Punk music movements.\nThis exhibition prompts the viewer to consider texture\, colour\, structure\, openings and accidents in the city. Precarious\, ephemeral pseudo-architectural structures and drawings exist in a state of flux; bundled\, propped\, and balanced\, whilst Polaroids act as witness to moments of discovery. DESCRIPTION:Goma Gallery of Modern Art. 13th January 2024\n10TH JANUARY – 4TH FEBRUARY 2024\nOfficial opening: Saturday 13th January at 4pm\, GOMA 6 Lombard Street Waterford Ciaran Bowen’s current body of work focuses on the process of materiality of paint; he manipulates and pushes the paint through a variety of processes. By combining paint with industrial materials\, it allows the surface of the work to be moved outside the four cornered canvas and blur the space between what is painting and what is a sculpture. His work is non-representational focusing more on composition\, form and colour and how they acquire the space that they hang in to be investigated by the viewer\nAbout the Artist: Ciaran Bowen (b. 1990) is an artist based in Wexford. He achieved his BA (Hons) in Fine Art from SETU Wexford in 2015.\nHis work predominantly focuses on the materiality of paint and how it can be manipulated and pushed through a variety of processes. By combining the paint with industrial materials\, it allows the surface of the work to be moved outside the constraints of traditional painting. By drying sheets of paint\, he manipulates them by cutting\, collaging\, printing and flooding the surface of the work. It is not only about the surface of the work but the interplay of materials/ forms and how they intersect.\nRecent shows include: (2023) The Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition\, London\, (2023/2022) RHA Annual Exhibition\, Dublin\, (2023) Cape Sacred\, West Wales Art Center and (2022) A Slight Hiccup\, La Grange Gallery\, France. He was a recipient of the “Making and Momentum: In Conversation with Eileen Gray” Artist Prize (2022) awarded by Fashion designer Richard Malone as well as the Artlinks Bursary Award (2022). His work is also held in public and private collections including Carlow IT (2015)\, Wexford County Council (2019) and Wexford Arts Centre (2018 & 2021). The programme is open to all disciplines of Visual Arts practice. GOMA has approx. 8 exhibitions per year\, with a programme of professional development workshops\, networking events\, community events\, residencies\, emerging artist awards\, emerging curator awards\, performance events and music events. GOMA’s outreach programme works inclusively when organising such initiatives\, taking local groups\, new communities\, young people and diversity into consideration .\nGOMA exhibits the work of emerging and established artists who are committed to producing work within a socio-political framework. Work exhibited is selected on merit only.\nThe education and outreach programme at GOMA reflects the organisations interests with place\, politics and people through a programme of events\, workshops\, exhibitions\, talks and performances that allow audiences to engage.\nThe gallery is programmed 12–18 months in advance. DESCRIPTION:Goma Gallery of Modern Art. Saturday 18th and Saturday 25th November 2023 from 11:00 a.m.\, to 1pm.\nSeiko Hayase is a multidisciplinary artist based in Cork. She was part of GOMA Waterford’s 2022 programme as the gallery’s Connect 5 Awardee with her show World In Between. GOMA is delighted to be welcoming her back as she hosts this workshop\, which will be a fun and relaxed introduction to alginate casting.\nAlginate casting is a quick-setting sculpting method that allows casts and moulds of the body to be easily made.\nThis workshop is built around the theme ‘Things and Hands’. SUMMARY:ENCAUSTIC WORKSHOP WITH GER KENNEDY
DESCRIPTION:Goma Gallery of Modern Art. Saturday 21st October from 11.00am to 2.00pm\nIn this workshop you will learn a little about encaustic painting. This is a method of painting using a hot wax medium to which coloured pigments may be added\, if required. The molten medium will be applied to a rigid surface\, most often a wood panel. Encaustic is a stable and long lasting medium.\nParticipants are encouraged to bring scraps of text/ images etc to embed into their paintings. The best scraps to work with are photocopied images. Tissue paper can also be added as well as gold leaf.\nYou will incise images into encaustic and add colour to the incisions.\nThe workshop will be led by artist Ger Kennedy\, who will supply all materials with the exception of gold leaf. Please bring images/text that mean something to you.\nGer Kennedy is a Tramore based painter and printmaker. She studied fine art in the UK and Ireland\, and has had several group shows and a solo show. DESCRIPTION:Venue: GOMA Gallery Waterford\nDates:14 October – 25 November 2023\nAll Flesh is a new exhibition by artist Gillian O’Shea. The official launch will take place at GOMA Waterford on Saturday 14th October from 4–6pm. All are welcome!\nAll Flesh is a new site specific multi-sensory textile installation and video work by Irish artist Gillian O’Shea. Through multi-layered installations sculpture\, colour\, film and sound merge\, transporting us to an uneasy confluence of opposing realities. These created environments invite visitors to experience\, consider and reflect on our ambivalent attitudes to the natural environment.\nThis work is inspired by the artist’s investigations of the often forgotten and unseen intrinsic importance of fungi and lichens in stabilising networks of living relationships. These humble organisms are intrinsically connected to vast networks of life on earth\, including our own. Yet\, to most of us they are inconsequential.\nCoarse\, fleshy organisms intertwine and penetrate the troposphere\, swaddling each vascular network\, protecting the almighty mycelial network. This is the living subterranean seam by which our world is connected\, regardless of and despite our interventions.\n‘Pulse’ is a 4-minute-long video piece\, central to the exhibition. This multi-projection of film immerses the visitor in a dystopian representation of the future. Drawing on the ombre chinois’s tradition of shadow play paper mechanical links create a pulley system\, using the greenhouse as a motif of human intervention. They are inevitably devoured by the very operating system that created them.\nAll Flesh will be exhibited in the Gallery of Modern Art Waterford (GOMA) from 14th October to 25th November 2023. From 14th October – 2nd December 2023\nGOMA has a new series of children’s art classes starting up this October!\nClasses are suitable for children aged 4–7 years and 8–12 years. These popular classes are focused on being fun and engaging and are hosted by GOMA’s resident studio artists and facilitators. DESCRIPTION:8TH FEBRUARY – 3RD MARCH  2024.\nOFFICIAL OPENING SATURDAY 10TH FEBRUARY 2024 AT GOMA WATERFORD\, 4PM–6PM.\nCaroline Bowles and Maia De Faveri .\nEach year GOMA aims to highlight the wealth of talent graduating annually in Ireland by awarding selected graduates in with an exhibition. This year\, two artists have been chosen for the award: Maia De Faveri of SETU Waterford and Caroline Bowles of MTU Crawford College.\nAbout Caroline Bowles\nCaroline Bowles\, a recent graduate of MTU Crawford College of Art & Design\, is a recipient of the GOMA Exhibition Award and will showcase her work a GOMA Gallery in 2024. Caroline is a visual artist working in the areas of drawing and painting. She was born in Wicklow\, grew up in Kerry and now lives on the Cork/Waterford border area.\nShe studied animation in Ballyfermot Senior College\, Dublin and Drawing in St. John’s College in Cork\, and is a graduate of Crawford College of Art and Design\, Cork graduating with a B.A. (Honors) in Fine Art.  She has a background as a trained musician\, which is a vital inspiration and stimulus in her art making; Caroline is an All Ireland winning Irish harpist having performed and toured in Australia and played in the National Concert Hall\, Dublin. She has also trained as an acupuncturist and practitioner of Chinese Medicine\, completing her studies in Dublin and Nanjing\, China.\nPainting and drawing is an embodied practice for the artist and is informed by over twenty years of meditation and reflection in the Vietnamese Zen Tradition. Her paintings are held in public and private collections in Ireland and Berlin. “My work is mainly figurative and embodied in nature with free-flowing abstracted elements. I use multiple layers of wet and dry drawing and painting media: inks\, acrylic paint washes\, charcoal and pastel on paper and large canvases\, sometimes with audio or video elements. Excavating my own past learnings of study and travel in Asia\, of meditation\, calligraphy\, Qi Gong\, acupuncture practice and music training\, I find myself reimaging figurative and abstract postures which express something of movement\, fluidity and power and how it is held emotionally in the human frame.\nThe embodied act of painting\, touching in just enough to capture the figure in movement\, allowing them to emerge on the canvas until they are barely visible keeps these images gestural\, active and authentic. Through painting and drawing I explore visual expressions of the beauty of enacted truth in gesture\, movement and the passage of time. The dramatic colours and emotional expression of Francis Bacon\, Sargy Mann and Paula Rego as well as the abstract movement of Judith Godwin and Zao Wou-Ki\, all inspire my work.”\n– Caroline Bowles\nAbout Maia De Faveri\nMaia De Faveri a recent graduate of SETU Waterford Visual Arts Department\, is a recipient of the GOMA Exhibition Award and will showcase her work a GOMA Gallery in 2024.\nMaia is originally from Italy\, where she trained in sculpture and mosaic art. She worked for several years as an artist and art teacher in Italy and Mexico. After moving to Ireland and attending the Visual Art course in SETU Waterford\, her art took a new direction\, focusing on creating spaces for people to explore\, interact with\, and find moments of meditation.\n“My installations are like a journey through life\, inspired by the simple wonders of existence\, creativity\, and growth. I find beauty in the mysteries of life’s beginnings and the beautiful chaos of creation. When I create\, I focus on playing\, being a bit random\, and finding a peaceful flow. I don’t limit myself to the usual tools; instead\, I enjoy the challenge of solving problems in my own playful way. Exploring new ways to express myself keeps things exciting. I especially love working with materials I’ve never used before\, especially everyday items designed for something else. It’s like giving these materials a new lease on life\, investing time and energy to transform them into something special.\nMy art is not just about what I see or feel; it’s meant to create a space for others to have their own unique experience. I don’t define that experience; it comes alive through the performances of those who come to see it – how they interact and take it in. Feel free to explore; don’t worry about breaking anything. DESCRIPTION:Goma Gardens. Saturday 18th May 12.00 noon to 7.00 PM\n\n \n\nAll Events are free.\n\n \n\nSelf-Directed Drawing Workshop in GOMA Gardens\, 12-3 pm. Drawing materials will be available for participants on the day to engage in drawing in the gardens.\n\n \n\nDrawing Techniques with Úna Walsh\, 3-5 pm.
