CREATIVE SCHOOLS FOR NEW MUSIC WEEK

THURSDAY 7TH FEBRUARY – WIT CHAPEL COLLEGE STREET CAMPUS WATERFORD

A concert of original work by three Waterford Secondary Schools will take place at the WIT Chapel, College Street Campus, on Thursday 7th February at 1:00 pm. Nine new compositions will be performed, five by the composers themselves and four by soprano Ruth Gallagher accompanied by Eric Sweeney on piano.  This concert will celebrate the work of young students who participated on the Creative Arts Programme for Music and Poetry.

This programme, kindly supported by Waterford City Council Arts Grants 2012, was designed to nurture and develop the creative skills of 1st and Transition Year music students. It was then expanded to include 2nd and 5th Year music students. Pupils of De la Salle, Our Lady of Mercy, Newtown and Presentation participated. Workshops between November 2012 and January 2013 were facilitated by composer Dr Eric Sweeney and poet Mark Roper. Composer and poet engaged students’ in the creative process demonstrating their approach to collaboration as illustrated by their involvement in Come the Sails: a new choral work for Waterford in 2011. Students were given their own project: to create poetry and music. At further workshops and with the help and encouragement of music teachers, poetry and music was created and songs developed. The project was documented by Waterford film-maker John Loftus. This performance will showcase the resulting work.
