Tramore of our Times by historian Dr. Maxine Keoghan captures events and the people of Tramore of the twentieth century in great detail. With the realisation that future generations will not be aware of how their ancestors lived and worked, Maxine carefully crafted an account of life in Tramore from the 1920s to the 1960s.
Over a five year period Maxine interviewed more than 40 people of the Tramore Heritage Group and beyond to produce a multi-layered depiction of the sea-side resort. According to Maxine, ‘It became clear that the telling of the social history of Tramore people could not be done in isolation and so it became important to place Tramore and its people against a backdrop of national policies and events’.
The social histories include the traditions of how people lived and worked; how women worked in the home, the foods they purchased and prepared along with describing the arduous domestic tasks of daily life. Further emphasis was placed on prominent people of the community. Accounts of local people and their businesses include Lodges Stores and the history of the Lodge family, Murray’s who have continued in the farrier business for over a century, Molloy’s butchers and Halligan’s radio repairs.
The story of Gerard Stubbs, his boot-making business, his service with the coast guard and his local tours which took people on magical journeys across Ireland is wonderful to read. The history of the Brennan brothers who fought for Irish independence was placed in the context of WWI, John Redmond and the Irish Parliamentary Party and Irish Independence and is another example of the complex nature of Irish history of this time.
Tramore of our Times will be launched in Tramore Library on the 10th May at 7pm and all are welcome. The publication will be available to purchase in Tramore at the library and at Cahill’s of Market Street.
