HERITAGE WEEK 2018

Saturday August 18th – Sunday August 26th

Heritage Week 2018Each year, during the last week of August, many national and hundreds of local community organisations participate by organizing events throughout the country.

Many of the events that take place during the week are free and the programme highlights the abundance of great work that is carried out in all communities in Ireland to preserve and promote our natural, built and cultural heritage.

 

 

 

 

De La Salle Scout Pipe Band
Tramore Promenade, Old Lifeguard hut, Co. Waterford, Monday August 20th at 8pm

Waterford Oldest Pipe Band celebrates over 80years and will march on Tramore’s Promenade.

Stories from the Dunmore Road
Ardkeen Library, Tuesday August 21st at 6:30pm – 7:30pm

Joe Falvey will take you on a walking tour of the Dunmore Road without leaving your seat. Virtual tour will include Lombard Street Bridge via Ardkeen to the Brasscock, Newtown and on to the Dunmore Road.

Professor of Modern Irish History Diarmaid Ferriter
Central Library, Lady Lane, Waterford, Wednesday August 22nd at 6:00pm – 7:30pm

Diarmaid Ferriter is Professor of Modern Irish History at UCD. His books include The Transformation of Ireland 1900-2000 (2004), Judging Dev: A Reassessment of the life and legacy of Eamon de Valera (2007) and Occasions of Sin: Sex and Society in Modern Ireland (2009).

His most recent book, Ambiguous Republic: Ireland in the 1970s was published in 2012. He is a regular broadcaster on television and radio and a weekly columnist with the Irish Times.

Captain George Sprigg Royal Navy
Tramore Library, Co. Waterford, Thursday August 23rd at 7:00pm – 8:00pm

Captain George Sprigg – Talk by Paul Brent George sprig lived and died in Tramore. He captured over 40 slave ships and saved thousands of slaves as part of his Royal Navy career.

History of Dunhill Castle and The Power Family by Noel Power
Tramore Library, Co. Waterford, Friday August 24th at 7:00pm – 8:00pm

Noel Power gives a wonderful lecture every year, but this year we wanted to add the element of surprise.
