ALBAN BERG’S ‘LULU’ LIVE FROM THE MET OPERA

Screened Live at ODEON Waterford on Saturday, 21st November at 5.30pm

Lulu 2 Resized

Lulu is opera’s femme fatale – a sexually irresistible woman who destroys the lives of everyone around her. Visual artist William Kentridge has devised a brand new production of Alban Berg’s opera for the Met which has been described as ‘spellbinding’ by The Observer and ‘masterful’ by The New York Times.  German soprano Marlis Petersen, who has sung the title role to great acclaim around the world and retires the part after these Met performances, leads the cast.

One of the most important stage works of the 20th century, Lulu is the drama of a young woman who sexually and emotionally dominates a wide range of willing victims, both male and female. Set in Vienna, Paris and London, the opera’s high octane plot features murder, blackmail, suicide, and ultimately tragedy for Lulu. In this new production, director William Kentridge incorporates his own illustrations as video projections and animations, forming a vivid monochrome backdrop to the drama unfolding on stage. Composer Alban Berg’s score employs the innovative techniques pioneered by his teacher Arnold Schoenberg but in a keenly dramatic way that makes it accessible to all kinds of audiences.

The pioneering Met: Live in HD has been a global phenomenon since it began 10 years ago, and set a template for a whole new way of experiencing live entertainment. More than 17 million tickets have been sold since 2006. ‘The Met: Live in HD’ can now be seen in more than 2,000 venues in 70 countries.
