RTE VANBRUGH QUARTET IN CITY HALL’S LARGE ROOM

RTE Vanburgh Quartet

RTE Vanbrugh Quartet

The Large Room, City Hall, Thursday November 14th – 20.00

Waterford Music presents Ireland’s foremost chamber ensemble the RTE Vanbrugh Quartet who will perform the world premiere of Christopher NORBY’s ‘Three Movements for String Quartet’, which was commissioned by RTÉ in 2012. The composer writes about it: “This piece came at the end of a lot of collaborative works in theatre and videogames which involved an approach to composing which didn’t allow for ‘pure’ music: everything had to serve a dramatic purpose in the context of each collaboration. Therefore, on this piece, I didn’t consider much else rather than musical sound and wanted to give space to some musical ideas I had”.
Christopher Norby, born in Derry in 1983, with a PhD in composition through the University of Ulster, currently works in Arizona on music for concerts, opera, theatre and dance theatre as well as videogames. His commissions include BBC Radio 3 (Ulster Orchestra), City of London Festival for the Brodsky Quartet, Concorde, NI Opera, Echo Echo Dance Theatre and the Verbal Arts Centre. His music has been performed across Ireland and the UK, Slovenia and Japan.
In this concert Norby’s piece will be paired with two masters of the classic and romantic tradition: Ludwig van BEETHOVEN with his String Quartet in F major Op. 18 No.1, partially inspired by the tomb scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and Antonin DVORAK and his String Quartet No. 14 in A-flat major, written after returning from the US to his native Bohemia.
