BOULWARISM AT SOMA CONTEMPORARY GALLERY

BoulwarismSoma Contemporary Gallery presents Boulwarism by PLM associates. The exhibition explores the kind of labor practices that led to the recent building collapse in Bangladesh and worker suicides at Foxconn Technology Group in China.

PLM associates is a collaborative project between artists Anita Allyn and Mauro Zamora. As PLM associates, Allyn & Zamora lead a fictional think tank, which focuses on end-capitalism and peak industry strategies. Through this project Allyn & Zamora reflect on corporate rhetoric and values to call attention to the impermeable facade of corporate structures while highlighting a rupture of capitalism itself. PLM stands for Product Lifecycle Management an industry term describing the process of managing the entire lifecycle of a product from its conception, through design and manufacture, to service and disposal.

Boulwarism is a negotiation tactic named after General Electric’s former vice president of labor and community relations. Serving from 1956 until 1961, Lemuel Boulware, pioneered the Boulwarist strategy – “a take-it or leave-it” tactic that undermining unions and was later found to be an unfair labor practice. This exhibit will consists of videos, printed media pieces and small sculptures.

Anita Allyn and Mauro Zamora are both American artists working in a number of media from video and installation to painting and woks on paper. Allyn earned a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts University. Allyn has been in numerous exhibitions both in the US and abroad. Mauro Zamora earned a Certificate in Painting and an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Zamora is the recipient of the Pew Fellowship in the Arts and has exhibited in the US and abroad. They both live and work in Philadelphia.

Exhibition opens Saturday September 28th and runs until Saturday November 9th.

Soma’s Contemporary Gallery’s opening hours are Wednesdays to Saturdays 12 noon to 5pm.
