The Waterford Healing Arts Trust presents Anamnesis, an exhibition of new works by Marie Brett in The Index Gallery, Waterford Central Library
The Waterford Healing Arts Trust is delighted to present an exhibition of new works by West Cork based artist Marie Brett entitled ‘Anamnesis’ in The Index Gallery, Waterford Central Library opening on 23rd April 2013.
This exhibition results from the ‘Amulet project’, a process of collaboration between the artist and women who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss and explores ideas around the use of amulets or keepsakes to commemorate infant loss.
Marie is a graduate of Goldsmith’s College University of London and a recipient of a number of Arts Council awards. The Amulet project was informed by a two year research phase she led in partnership with Cork University Maternity Hospital and subsequent collaboration with bereaved parents in partnership with Cork University Maternity Hospital Cork, Waterford Regional Hospital / Waterford Healing Arts Trust and the Mid-western Regional Maternity Hospital in Limerick. The collaboration explored the idea of the amulet as an object signifying farewell and memorial specific to pregnancy and infant loss primarily through dialogue, video and photography.
This collaboration process led to an exhibition of audio work, photographic drawings and a colour catalogue with photographs and commissioned essays on the theme which, in the words of the artist ‘gives voice to sensitive and often hidden aspect of life experience, that of pregnancy and infant loss’. The catalogue will be available for sale via the Waterford Healing Arts Trust at 051 842664 or WHAT@hse.ie.
The exhibition will be on view in Waterford Central Library, Lady Lane, from 23rd April and will run until Friday 3rd May 2013. It will be open to the public from Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5.30pm, and until 8pm on Wednesdays.
There will be a free public talk in Waterford Central Library on Wednesday, 24th April at 6pm with artist Marie Brett, participant Mary and Nancy Falvey of the Ballyphehane/Togher Arts and Crafts Initiative which was involved in the research phase of the project. The talk will chaired by Mary Grehan, Arts Director of the Waterford Healing Arts Trust. All are welcome.
The Amulet project is supported by the Arts Council via Create Artists in the Community award, the HSE (Cork) Arts and Health programme, the Social and Heath Education Project and the Waterford Healing Arts Trust.
