Soldiers and Pirates

Waterford Concert Orchestra presents Soldiers and Pirates April concert will explore music associated with military and piratical matters both historical and fictional. Beethoven’s Battle Symphony (also called Wellington’s Victory) is a vivid musical portrayal of the battle of Vittoria where the opposing armies can clearly be heard with their canons and rifle shots, and a little bit of celebration in victory. Beethoven had originally been a supporter of Napoleon but his support waned following Napoleon,s declaration as Emperor. No doubt, Beethoven was also underwhelmed when Napoleon ordered an artillery bombardment of Vienna. Beethoven had refused to leave the city despite the immanent attack.

Also included in the concert is music by Malcolm Arnold. In his work Peterloo Arnold paints us a picture of the Peterloo Massacre which occurred at St. Peter’s Field Manchester on 16 August 1819 where 15 people were killed and 400 – 700 injured when the cavalry rode in to disperse a crowd of 60,000-80,000 that had gathered to demand reform of parliamentary representation.
