Entr’acte

Entr’acte is an exhibition of new paintings by Sarah Edmondson. Inspired by the philosophical writings of Gaston Bachelard (The Poetics of Space, 1958) her work is an investigation into the narrative capacity of empty spaces. It explores the symbolic value of architectural structures and the ability of furniture to personify the inhabitants of a household or an interior setting. With the theme of drawers, chests, locks and wardrobes, we shall resume contact with the unfathomable store of daydreams of intimacy…They are hybrid objects, subject objects. Like us, through us and for us, they have a quality of intimacy (Bachelard, 1958: 78).

Continuing with this investigation, Entr’acte is a playful analysis of the relationship between theatre and painting, and the role of the set in the depiction of a story or a tale. Void of any actors these painted sets can still translate meaning; evoking a particular mood or atmosphere through subtle tonal variations.

Sarah Edmondson is originally from Waterford, but currently resides in Dublin. She spent three years studying at University College Cork; graduating in 2007 with a BA (Hons) History of Art and Sociology. She later moved to Dublin in order to further pursue her studies; graduating from the National College of Art and Design with a BA (Hons) Art and Design Education, 2012.
