WATERFORD’S MAGIC MIX OF ARTS

Printmaking, Dinosaurs, Composition and Dance all have a place in this year’s arts programme for Waterford City. Announcing the 2013 Arts Practise Grants, the Mayor of Waterford Councillor Jim D’Arcy described it as a “magical mix of projects and programmes in these otherwise tough and austere times.

In all Waterford City Council will fund 30 groups/artists and schemes over the period of the year. The grants range from aiding Red Kettle to present Waves by Mick Mulcahy, to Libby Seward’s intergenerational Dance Programme, a music project from Waterford Youth Arts leading towards the return of the Lark in the (People’s) Park to Films by Pat Daly, Neil O’Driscoll and Garry Kenneally, a plethora of ‘cut out’ dinosaurs by Kevin O’Keefe, a new printmaking facility to be run by Martin Fahy and a music and poetry compositional school’s programme with Dr. Eric Sweeney and Mark Roper.

In all there were a total of 59 applicants for 17 grant areas spread over the three categories identified in the 2011 – 2016 Arts Plan, namely The Production of Quality Programmes, Audience Development and The Artist and the City.

This adjudication followed the 3rd year of competitive applications, as outlined in the Arts Plan. It also marked the specification of areas the Council needs to invest in to ensure a strategic approach to both the City Arts Programme and Arts audiences of the future.
