QUINTET Cassiopeia Winds

D a n z i – I b e r t – H i n d e m i t h – N i e l s e n – A r n o l d

Thursday 14 March 2013 –  Large Room, City Hall, Waterford

Five wind instruments (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn) in an Irish Wind Quintet, called after Cassiopeia, the W-shaped constellation of five bright stars.
Under the sparkling Waterford Crystal chandeliers in Waterford’s 18th century monumental Large Room, Cassiopeia Winds will give a taste of the kind of music originally played in that Georgian Ballroom.
Besides Franz Danzi’s classical masterpiece, 20th century pieces for wind quintet will sound with the graceful wit of Jacques Ibert, the symphonic grandeur of Carl Nielsen, Paul Hindemith’s lean, chic neo-classicism and Malcolm Arnold’s catchy, sensitive humour.
Cassiopeia Winds consists of leading players from RTÉ’s National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and its Concert Orchestra, as well as the Crash Ensemble: Catríona Ryan (flute), Matthew Manning (oboe), Deirdre O’Leary (clarinet), John Hearne (bassoon) and Cormac ÓhAodáin (horn).
Their concerts represent the startling originality and exoticism, and the special palette of tone colours, typical for wind ensemble music. Since its inception in 2010 Cassiopeia Winds has built a unique and thrilling repertoire of classical, modern and avantgarde pieces to suit its varied and innovative programming.
